Santa Cruz Wins Majority Decision Over Mares
Leo Santa Cruz (now 31-0-1, 17 KO's) won the
vacant WBA Super World Featherweight Title with a majority
decision over Abner Mares. The fight was energetic and high pace
at moments where both had great spots, but it was ultimately
Santa Cruz who looked the more fresh of the two over the long
run.
From the very sound of the bell in the opening round Mares
jumped on Santa Cruz. Mares seemed to have a plan and it worked
early, smothering Santa Cruz and keeping him against the ropes
while unloading. Santa Cruz was unable to use his height of
reach in such close quarters as Mares kept this up in round 2 as
well.
But the corner of Mares told him to change his strategy and to
try and outbox him from the outside instead. That turned out to
be the biggest mistake as Mares kept on the edge of all of Santa
Cruz's punches for basically the remainder of the fight. Why
change what worked so well early? Santa Cruz appeared to win
nearly every round after.
Final scores were a bizarre 114-114 and two rightful at 117-111.
Both fighters said they'd be up for a rematch next. Mares drops
to 29-2-1 with 15 KO's.
