Barrera Defeats
Juarez
Controversy or
Honest Mistake?
Odd Night For Staple
Center Card... To Say The Least
|
|
|
Written by William
Trillo
Photos By Bret "The
Threat" Newton
When Janos Nagy went down at the
49 second mark of the first round from one good body
punch from defending WBO Jr. Lightweight Champion
Jorge Barrios something told me that there was
something strange was in the air on this evening. As
it turns out, there was!
As the Main Event between Marco
Antonio Barrera and Rocky Juarez began to unfold, I
thought what I felt was coming true as with each and
every round Juarez made this fight closer and
closer, until I for one saw Juarez winning the fight
115-113. As I asked around after the fight and
before the "official" scores were read, I found that
a good portion of my peers saw this one even...a
draw. I had no problem with that, it was close, no
doubt about it. So when Michael Buffer announced to
the HBO audience that the scores read 115-113
Juarez, 115-113 Barrera & 114-114 even, I thought
the judges did a good job, and as anyone could see,
this was a good tough and close battle that Marco
started out in fine form but was overtaken in the
latter rounds by a determined and tough as nails
Rocky. Little did I know the shock we would be in
for in the post fight press room...but more on that
in a minute, first to the fight itself.

Ruiz-Lopez draw at Morongo, Ochoa outslugs Carrera
Headbutts happen. |
|
By Raj Sharma
An accidental clash of heads put an abrupt end to Friday
night’s main event between Samuel Lopez and Edel Ruiz at
the Morongo Casino in Cabazon, California. The two
junior featherweights had fought a cautious first round
and were still testing the waters in the second when
they banged heads, leading to a cut just to the right of
Ruiz’s left eyebrow. Referee David Mendoza took Ruiz
over to the ringside physician for an examination of the
wound, and then waved off the contest on the advice of
the doctor. The bout goes into the books as a technical
draw, with the official time of the stoppage listed as
2:11 of round two. Although the cut was not particularly
big or deep, it had the ability to interfere with Ruiz’s
line of vision leading to the stoppage. Lopez’s record
now stands at 17-3-1 with 6 KOs, while Ruiz is 28-14-4
with 15 KOs.

Guerrero Victorious -
Next Fight June 23 |
|
A vicious body attack
combined with violent uppercuts were the key punches
that
smoothed the progress of Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero's
(17-1-1 10 KO's)
annihilation of Sandro Marcos (25-14-2 21 KO's) at the
HP pavilion in San Jose
Ca. The Ghost, coming off his first loss, had something
to prove to himself and all his fans and critics. In
the first round, Guerrero dominated his opponent with a
rangy jab and devastating shots to the body followed by
nice uppercuts. That same trend continued in round 2,
but it was a violent left uppercut that landed flush on
the face of Marcos that everyone was talking about, as
blood spewed into the front row. As round three
started, Guerrero dropped the native of Mazatlán MX with
a destructive left to the body. With pain on his face,
Sandro got up only to be pummeled by an onslaught of
punches, as referee John Schorle halted the bout with
2:06 left in the round.
"After my first loss, some people were skeptical of my
talent. I had to send a
message to the boxing community, that I'm worthy of a
title shot. All top dogs, bring it on" - Robert
Guerrero

Barrera WINS Fight After
Being Declared A Draw |
|
Photo: Bret "The Threat"
Newton
Marco Antonio Barrera
managed to get awarded a win over Rocky Juarez after the
fight had been officially declared a Draw.
In a fight that was action packed and close to the eye,
it appeared there were three possible ways to score it,
1 point either way, or a draw. Juarez managed to give
Barrera problems with the left hook that frustrated
Barrera, but Barrera put on his boxing plan and managed
to win the in between rounds.

"The Kidd" Diaz Is Champ Again |
|
|
Written By Raj "Another
One Bites The Dust" Sharma
The cream always rises. Julio
"The Kidd" Diaz is a champ again, albeit this time
an interim one. The former IBF lightweight champion
scored a twelve round unanimous decision over
veteran Ricky Quiles last night in Hollywood,
Florida to capture the interim IBF lightweight
title. Diaz will become the regular IBF lightweight
champion if current titleholder Jesus Chavez does
not face him after Chavez recovers from injuries.
Official scores were 120-108, 119-109, and 118-110.
Diaz pressed the action throughout the contest,
doing some nice work to the body and head on his 35
year old southpaw opponent. After falling behind on
the scorecards early, Quiles began to stand his
ground more in the middle rounds and scored with
some clean straight lefts. Not known as a hard
hitter, Quile's power shots didn't have the
authority to hurt his opponent, who kept pressing
the action. With the win, Diaz's record improves to
33-3 with 24 KOs. Quiles slips to 39-7-3 with 8 KOs.
On the undercard, unknown Russian Vadim Tokarev
captured the NABF Cruiserweight title with a fourth
round TKO win over previously unbeaten Felix Cora
Jr. Round four will be almost certainly be given
consideration for round of the year, as Cora battled
back from a knockdown to stun Tokarev, who turned
the tide again and had Cora in trouble on the ropes
causing referee James Warring to intervene at 2:52
of the round. Tokarev remains unbeaten at 22-0-1
with 15 KOs, while Cora suffers his first defeat to
dip to 18-1-2 with 9 KOs.
In the other two bouts televised on the "Tribal
Pride" PPV, former kickboxing champion Siala "Mighty
Mo" Siliga was out pointed over six rounds by Lamar
Stephens in a heavyweight bout, and free swinging
Columbian middleweight Samuel Miller upped his
record to 14-0 with an eight round unanimous
decision win over Martin Desjardins.

Ricky Hatton Considers
New Options
As WBA Welterweight Champion |
|
|
Newly minted WBA Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton
is enjoying the fruits of his labor after banging
out a unanimous decision over tough southpaw Luis
Collazo last weekend in Boston. "I'm over the moon,"
exclaimed the undefeated Englishman. "When I first
started boxing, I just wanted to become a world
champion and now I've won four titles and am a world
champion at two different weights. It really doesn't
get better, especially with topping the bill for the
first time in the United States."
Hatton's maiden voyage last Saturday into the
welterweight ranks didn't come easy as the
determined challenger was forced to dig deep by the
proud Brooklyn based reigning champion. "Collazo was
a lot tougher than people were giving him credit for
beforehand," said Hatton. " I felt stronger than him
but there was a significant difference between
junior welter and welter. I think he's going to come
back a better fighter, in fact he might even be an
avoided fighter now because he's a lot better than
people give him credit for, definitely."

There’s been more than a
simple change in scenery for
World Middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor as
he prepares in Detroit’s historic

change in an already intense work rate, and a change in
attitude.
“It’s a boxing atmosphere
here and I love it,” said Taylor, who is now training
with the legendary
Emanuel Steward in the Motor City. “Kronk Gym
has had a lot of champions and I’m in awe just to be

Chad Dawson & Eric
Harding Teleconference |
|
Harding:
First, I would like to thank SHOWTIME and Gary Shaw for
putting it together and making it happen. I tip my hat
to Chad Dawson for taking the fight. And on June 2, the
best man is going to win. I think it is a good
opportunity for both of us to showcase what we can do. I
am looking for a good, exciting fight.
Dawson: I am a young fighter, and I know Eric is
a great fighter and an excellent boxer. I am going
forward to this. I am trying to be an excellent boxer,
as well as step up in competition. I think Eric Harding
will be a good fight for me, and it will be a good fight
for both of us. Like he said, may the best man win. Good
luck to Eric, and I will see him on June 2.

Camacho Jr. vs. Tsurkan
Added To Tarver-Hopkins |
|
|
Admittedly, Hector Camacho, Jr. has been taking his
training a bit lightly and his opponents for granted
throughout much of his 11-year professional boxing
career. Those are mighty admissions from the son of a
boxing legend who has but one loss and a single draw in
44 pro fights.
Realizing
that the window of opportunity for a man once viewed as
a “Can’t Miss Prospect” will remain open only so long,
Camacho, Jr. has promised to himself and boxing fans
that they will see a more focused and proficient
performance beginning on Saturday night, June 10. That
is when the Puerto Rico native and resident of Orlando,
Florida, steps in the ring at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic
City against Ukrainian Andrey Tsurkan in a scheduled
10-round contest -- with the prize being a top world
rating. This championship contest will be featured on
the undercard of the Antonio Tarver-Bernard Hopkins
telecast on HBO Pay-Per-View.

The WBC has confirmed
with Brian Viloria’s manager, Gary Gittelson, that WBC
light flyweight world champion Viloria is still
uncertain as to when he will be able to fight next.
Consequently, the WBC has ordered the mandatory
challenger, Juanito Rubillar of the Philippines, who has
been waiting for a long time, to fight the number two
ranked contender, Wandee Singwangcha of Thailand, for
the WBC light flyweight interim title.
Brian Viloria will fight the winner of this fight when
he is ready to resume his boxing career.
The winning bidder to stage the interim title fight is
Naris Boxing Promotion, from Thailand, who outbid
Gabriel Elorde Jr. from the Philippines.

Back To Back Boxing On
HBO |
|
A quartet of
power-punching junior lightweights will take the
spotlight when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: MARCO ANTONIO
BARRERA VS. ROCKY JUAREZ AND JORGE BARRIOS VS. JANOS
NAGY is seen live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles
on SATURDAY, MAY 20 (10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT/ 9:30
p.m. CT). The HBO Sports team of Jim Lampley, Larry
Merchant and Emanuel Steward will be ringside for the
event, which will be available in HDTV, as well as
closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented
in Spanish on HBO Latino.
Battle-tested veteran and reigning belt-holder Marco
Antonio Barrera has spent half his life as a pro
fighter, amassing a prodigious record of 61-4, 42 KOs.
With titles in three separate weight classes, the
Mexican fighter’s accomplishments put him in an elite
category of boxers. When Barrera, 32, squares off
against Rocky Juarez in a 12-round bout for his junior
lightweight championship, he will have the opportunity
to enhance an already illustrious career.
Part of an up-and-coming class of exciting young junior
lightweights, Rocky Juarez (25-1, 18 KOs), 26, is
fighting to forge his own legacy. The Houston native has
lost only once in his professional career and intends to
keep it that way. Regardless of which warrior emerges
victorious, fans can expect a terrific showdown between
two hard-hitting fighters.
Two more junior lightweights make their HBO debuts in
the opening bout. Jorge Barrios (45-2-1, 32 KOs) of
Buenos Aires is an eccentric performer and one of the
sport’s toughest battlers. Hungary’s left-handed Janos
Nagy (23-0, 14 KOs) will be looking to extend his
unbeaten record in this 12-round showdown at 130 pounds.

Ever |
|
Fan interest generated by the genuine animosity between
top Australian super middleweights Danny Green and
Anthony Mundine has risen to a fever pitch before their
historic clash this Wednesday in front of an expected
crowd of 40,000 at mammoth Aussie Stadium in Sydney.
Sparked by the bitter feud, a spiteful chord has been
struck across the country, drawing battle lines
involving not just hardcore Ozzie fight fans but casual
observers as well. Adding fuel to the fire is the right
to challenge undefeated WBA Champion Mikkel Kessler that
will go to the victor.

World Bantamweight
Champion Rafael Marquez Signs with Gary Shaw Productions |
|
Promoter Gary
Shaw announced today the signing of IBF
bantamweight champion
RAFAEL MARQUEZ
to an exclusive contract with Gary Shaw
Productions, LLC. Marquez, a consensus Top-10
Pound-for-Pound champion, joins a star-studded
stable that already features the "Lords of the
Flies (and super flies)," including undefeated
IBF/IBO flyweight champion
Vic Darchinyan,
NABA/NABO flyweight champion
Glenn Donaire
and his brother, NABF super flyweight champion
Nonito Donaire.
"Who says good things don't come in small
packages?" asked Shaw. "I have been a huge
Rafael Marquez fan throughout his career and I
know he is destined to become boxing's
next superstar. Rafael is scheduled to defend
his title when he headlines GSP's August 5 card
on Showtime Championship Boxing. The one thing
he has lacked throughout his career he will lack
no longer -- strong promotional commitment. I
just love watching him fight!"
Marquez, 35-3 (31 KOs), from Mexico City,
Mexico, captured the IBF bantamweight title in
2003, knocking out undefeated defending champion
Tim Austin in the eighth round. He
has successfully defended his title six times

winning streak -- 11 by knockout -- including
knockout victories over former world champions
Austin, Mark Johnson and Mauricio Pastrana.

Karmazin Defends Title
vs. Corey Spinks On July 8 |
|
Roman Karmazin
will defend his IBF junior middleweight
title against former undisputed world welterweight
champion Cory Spinks on a special edition of
SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Saturday, July 8,
LIVE on SHOWTIME from the Savvis Center in the
challenger's hometown of St. Louis, Mo. The fight
will be promoted by Don King Productions.
Karmazin (34-1-1, 1 ND, 21
KOs), of Russia, stamped himself as one of the
junior middleweight division's best in his last
start when he captured the IBF 154-pound title with
a convincing, upset 12-round unanimous decision
over highly regarded Kassim Ouma on July 14, 2005,
in Las Vegas. Karmazin has won five consecutive
starts (with one no-decision) since suffering his
lone loss on a decision to Javier Castillejo in a
bout for the WBC Interim 154-pound crown on July 12,
2002.
Spinks hopes to accomplish
what Jose Antonio Rivera did earlier this month on
SHOWTIME when he stepped up in weight on
his home turf and stunned Alejando “Terra” Garcia to
win the WBA 154-pound title. Spinks (34-3, 11 KOs)
will make his first appearance since losing his
undisputed world welterweight titles to Zab Judah
via a ninth-round TKO on Feb. 5, 2005, also at the
Savvis Center and on SHOWTIME. That exciting bout
was witnessed by 22,370, one of the largest crowds
in history to witness an in-door arena boxing
match.
On Saturday, July 1, a night
normally reserved for the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP
BOXING series, a special edition of "ShoBox:
The New Generation" will air at 9 p.m.
ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). Details on the
card will be announced soon.

Hatton vs. Collazo II?
Collazo to Hatton: ‘Make Good on Re-Match Promise’
Collazo Says He’ll Make Good on His Promise to Fight
Hatton in England |
|
BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Luis Collazo, who lost his World Boxing
Association welterweight title by a razor-thin decision
against England’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton on Saturday
in Boston, has asked Hatton to make good on his
post-fight promise to grant him a re-match.
“Ricky and Team Hatton were great sportsmen before and
after our fight on Saturday,” Collazo said from
his home in Brooklyn, N.Y. today. “I take Ricky as man
of his word. He said I gave him his toughest fight
ever. He admitted that I hurt him on several
occasions. He said he knew the fight was close. He
also said he would give me a re-match. Now he needs to
make good on that promise.

All Star
Boxing's "Battle of the Rising Stars"
Changes Made to May 19th
Montebello CA Card
|
|
|
Two fighters scheduled to appear
on All Star Boxing's "Battle of the Rising Stars"
show suffered medical setbacks and will not
participate on this Friday's show. Roberto Estrada,
scheduled to meet Karl Noons, suffered a broken
thumb in sparring and will sit out the show with
hopes of being able to fight again this summer.
Sacramento's Velvet Malone, who lost a decision to
Estrada last December, will now face Noons.
Aaron Martinez' situation
surrounds a spider bite on his knee that seems to
have reacted badly, resulting in great swelling,
pain and fluid accumulation. He is being treated
and hopes to get back in the gym soon. Vardan
Gasparyan will fill in and fight Alan Velasco. This
will now be a four round bout.

Hatton Narrowly Gets By
Collazo
Perhaps He Is Not As
Ready For The Mayweather's & Maragrito's Afterall |
|
|
In a fight that
appeared too close to call, a possible DRAW or a one
round win for either fighter, Luis Collazo showed either
the blueprints on how to beat Ricky Hatton, or Hatton
just had an off night. In any case, The fight was close,
the fight was tough and both men had their moments,
particularly for Hatton when he floored Collazo in the
opening round with the first punch, and for Collazo it
was having Hatton nearly out on his feet in the final
round. |
|
|
In round 1, a left hook right on the chin of Collazo
sent him down, seconds into the fight. He managed to get
up easy and smother Hatton which appeared to be his
fight plan for the night and stay close. At the end of
the round, Collazo's frustration prompted him to push
Hatton away as the referee had already broke the two. In
round 2, Collazo began to outbox Hatton, but was
staggered at the end of the round. In round 3 an
unintentional headbutt caused a nasty gash on the top of
Collazo's head, but caused no affect on the fight. In
round 4, Collazo began to take over and landed a flush
right hand that stopped Hatton in his tracks. In round 5
Collazo began to feel confident as Hatton had no answers
for the slick boxer. In round 6 Hatton appeared
frustrated and threw wide missing shots, giving Collazo
every opportunity to counter. In round 7 the fight began
to get sloppy and the holding became repetitive by both
men. In round 8 the two traded big shots, both men
getting in their own. In round 9 a huge left and right
hand by Collazo hurt Hatton and Hatton's left eye was
nearly shut closed. In round 10 the two held and hit the
majority of the round in another tough to score round.
In round 11, more of the same from the previous 2
rounds. Then in the 12th and final round, Collazo went
out and landed a 4 punch combination and staggered
Hatton with the left hook and right hand. Two more clean
punches from an unanswering Hatton was staggering and
trying to hold on after slipping to the canvas in
obvious trouble. Hatton was able to get back into gear
and managed to hold on, but was in the most trouble to
date in that round.
Final scores were 115 to 112, 115 to 112, and 114 to
113.
With the win, Hatton takes the WBA welterweight title
and ups his record to 41-0 with 30 KO's as Collazo falls
to 26-2 with 12, KO's.

Negatives Linger About
Mayorga's Positive Drug Test |
|
Written By
William Trillo
So the news started breaking about midday Thursday
afternoon that Ex-Super Welterweight Champ Ricardo
Mayorga failed his drug test after his loss to Oscar
De La Hoya last Saturday night.
According to
reports, trace amounts of the drug Lasix, also
called Furosemide, showed up in his post fight drug
test. Preliminary reports informed us that Lasix is
a diuretic, and it was used to help boxers lose
weight.
Unfortunately,
using Lasix to drop weight is banned by the Nevada
State Athletic Commission because it can be used to
mask illegal drugs, as it has been shown to do in
horse racing due to it being a diuretic.

Hamed Gets Jail
Time For Car Accident |
|
Naseem Hamed, the former world featherweight boxing
champion, was sentenced to 15 months in jail Friday
for dangerous driving that resulted in injuries.
A man suffered a broken leg and two broken arms when
Hamed's Mercedes crashed into two other cars in
northern England in April 2005. Prosecutors said
Hamed was driving at least 90 mph when he tried to
overtake a car and crashed into two vehicles.
The flamboyant Hamed, who boxed as "Prince Naseem,"
last fought in May 2002 when he was booed out of the
ring after a contentious decision over Spain's
Manuel Calvo in London. Hamed lost to Marco Antonio
Barrera in Las Vegas in 2002, his first defeat in 37
fights.
Hamed pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on March
31.
