  Billy’s Blog & Mail Pouch
Keep Dreamin’

By William Trillo
Well it was a great trip to Las Vegas and other than forgetting my laptop everything went wonderfully. Unfortunately by leaving my lappy I was unable to answer all the mail I got in regard to my “Steep Mountain” article and my prediction of Pacquiao defeating Oscar. I also was not able to respond to those who wrote to me immediately after the bout. My Blog/Mail Pouch will answer those emails sent my way in chronological order from the day after the “Steep” article up to the letters I am now receiving in regard to the now historical fight.

Here we go:

Subject: A Steep Mountain To Come Down From

I just wanted to go on record and disagree with your analysis of the Oscar vs Pacman fight. First of all, I don't even think this fight should be taking place because of the huge mismatch and that will be evident on Saturday. Second of all, lets remember that Pacman is not a defensive fighter nor has he ever been tested at that weight limit. He barely got past Marquez. Plus, there is a huge difference in size, reach, and power. I understand anything can happen in boxing but the odds are not in favor of Pacman. Oscar may get tired down the stretch but its easier to get tired when you have a bigger guy applying pressure but in this case he is the bigger guy. Pacman is no Mayweather he does not possess the defensive ability to beat Oscar where as Mayweather most definitely does. Pacman is just a give and take type of fighter (one dimensional). My prediction is Oscar wins by KO around the 6th or 7th round if not sooner. For the record I am not a Oscar fan I think he should be fighting real fighters like Margarito not blown up lightweights.

Sincerely,
Ronnie

Contender, Week One - Experience Shows
By Barb Pinnella
Finally, after many changes which saw a new channel in VERSUS, two new trainers in Tommy Brooks (who has trained such notables as Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker and Mike Tyson), and John Bray (a former fighter in the Heavyweight division), a new host in Tony Danza, and some change to the format of the show, Contender, season 4 has begun. As is Murphy’s Law, my computer decided to play games, and this first weeks’ coverage is a day later than I would have liked. Regardless, as has been the case for seasons one and two, I will be speaking with the loser of each fight every week to get their thoughts on their fight, the show, and their overall Contender experience.   "The Dream Match" Turns Into Mismatch;
PACQUIAO STOPS DE LA HOYA IN 8!!!!!!!!!

Photo: Bret "The Threat" Newton

Manny Pacquiao did what many did not think was possible. Not only did he beat the "bigger" Oscar De La Hoya, but he EASILY outboxed him through 8 rounds that Oscar didn't win a single one of. Pacquiao won as lopsided a fight as not many expected, but as Oscar proceeded to "get that ass beat", he knew that Pacquiao was too fast and too strong, so he quit on his stool after the 8th round.

All three judges at ringside scored the 7th round a 10-8 as Oscar was pummeled around the ring and was nearly stopped. Only one judge gave Oscar a single round, which was the first round, which was also one of the easiest rounds to score as Pacquiao easily jabbed Oscar's head off to start the fight and give his fans hope.

And to all the hate mail and negative comments we here at Pound4Pound got for going out on a limb by predicting Manny by stoppage, be sure your emails will be featured in our upcoming mail bag, lol. We told ya' so.

Victor Ortiz dropped Jeffrey Resto twice in the opening round and a final time in the 2nd before the fight was mercifully stopped. Ortiz showed good poise, but finished quick with straight rights and combinations to the body that made it hard for Resto to even want to continue.

Juan Manuel Lopez had the easiest time with Sergio Medina, dropping him three easy times in the first round as Medina showed no desire to really do anything but go to the canvas. Lopez retains the WBO JR. Featherweight Title. Final time was 1:38 of the opening round.

Daniel Jacobs stopped Victor Lares in 2 rounds at 2:44 with a combination that dropped Lares. Upon rising to his feet, referee Jay Nady had seen enough and waved it off.

  Rumble in Reading, PA
By Tim Donaldson
Friday, December 5 saw several brawls break out in Reading, PA. We’re not talking a street fight here but professional boxing, although at times it looked more like All-Pro Wrestling. But in the end, the brawlers were out-boxed by the boxers.

The main event featured Welterweight Mike Jones in a showdown with Luciano Perez. Perez seemed to have the upper hand early in the fight. Although Jones was able to get in several combinations in the first round, he was letting himself be pressured up against the ropes. Once Jones was up against the ropes, Perez was able to fight his way—inside, and Jones would struggle to get out. Except for a cut above Perez’s eye, the second round saw more of the same. Perez repeatedly pushed Jones into the ropes and used several combinations against him. Jones just couldn’t seem to bring his training to the fight. By the end of the second round, it looked as though Perez would have an easy time winning the fight. Jones no longer seemed to be boxing his way but was fighting the way Perez wanted him to fight.

Warning: Those who suffer from high blood pressure, have a heart condition, sweat profusely after a 30 second walk from the hotel to the press bus in the Las Vegas summer or are currently eating a cream filled donut while washing it down with a Diet Cola, you should avoid reading this article.

I have been saying since this fight promotion began that Manny Pacquiao was going to beat Oscar De La Hoya and I have closed most of my “Dream Fight” articles reminding everyone that Manny would defeat Oscar.  Conventional wisdom amongst the experts has been that Oscar is just too big and this fight is a joke.

Will Pacquiao’s Promise To Burn A Path
Through Mexico End With De La Hoya?

By Carlo Juarez
At the pre-fight press conference for the first battle between Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao, a confident Pacquiao was quoted as saying that he intended to burn a path through Mexico by beating both Marquez and Erik Morales.  Pacquiao had every reason to be confident.  Several months earlier he scored a surprising and dominant TKO victory over Marco Antonio Barrera.  It was one of his biggest achievements to date because of the brutal simplicity and relentless tenacity at which he conquered Barrera.  Barrera, a seemingly invincible figure in the featherweight division, elevated himself to the status of boxing elite after making a drastic and often unattainable transformation from an aggressive puncher to a more tactical boxer-puncher following a 12-round split decision loss to Erik Morales.  Since his split decision loss to Morales, Barrera went on to avenge his loss to Morales (twice) and scored victories over notable opponents such as Naseem Hamed, Johnny Tapia, Paulie Ayala and Rocky Juarez.  However, on November 15, 2003, his greatness was no match for the relatively unknown, but hungry Pacquiao. Click Here For Full Report

World ranked cruiserweight BJ Flores got an offer this week that fighters work their whole lives for, a world title shot. The only problem was he was offered the fight on four days notice.

“Sports Network called me on Tuesday and offered me a shot at the title against Enzo Maccarinelli for the vacant WBO belt in a fight to be held in England this Saturday. It’s a fight I’m very interested in, but I told the promoter; at least give me a couple of weeks to prepare. They told me it was a 'take it or leave it' proposition.” Click Here For More

Prospect Remillard Moving Up Featherweight Ranks
What a difference a year makes, especially for 22-year-old Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard, the reigning WBC Youth and USNBC featherweight champion.

A year ago, Remillard (16-0, 8 KOs) was in the midst of a 1 1/2 -year stretch of inactivity due to wrist injury requiring surgery for torn ligaments that separated bones in his hand. Noted hand surgeon Dr. Steven Margles (LaheyClinic in Burlington, MA) operated, using artificial bone and pins to hold everything together. The artificial bone, however, never healed properly and Dr. Margles performed additional surgery, where he took bone from Matt’s hip to his wrist, and held it together with a screw.   Tony Danza Is The Boss For Contender 4
By Barb Pinella
This Wednesday begins the fourth season of the boxing reality show, The Contender. There are several changes this time around, one of which being that the show will air on VERSUS now. I will detail that later, but the most notable change for the show itself is the absence of “Sugar” Ray Leonard as the host.  Replacing him is Tony Danza, who is probably best known for his five-year run on Taxi as Tony Banta, and his eight season series, Who’s the Boss?, in which he played Tony Micelli. And yes, his acting career began when he was discovered in a boxing gym. But I had an opportunity to spend a few minutes with our new host. Here’s a quick introduction to Danza, the boxer.
