Klitschko TKO's Rahman
Jabs Ex-Champion Into Submission |
|
By Nat Gottlieb - Courtesy HBO.com
It looks like there may be only one heavyweight on the planet
capable of mounting a serious challenge to Wladimir Klitschko.
Unfortunately for the boxing world, it’s his brother Vitali, and
the two will never fight each other. That leaves Wladimir with
no choice but to keep facing a lineup of wannabes and used-to-bes
in a succession of fights that must have even the Ukrainian
feeling like yawning in the ring.

Julie Lederman Has No Business Scoring Fights, Scored Fight For
Hopkins In Fight Holt Easily Won |
|
Kendall Holt won a surprising split decision over
late substitute Demetrius Hopkins in a fight Holt appeared to
have been ahead comfortably. From the opening round until the
final bell, Holt was first and last with the exception of maybe
3 to 4 rounds at most. Hopkins was mostly smiling and when his
corner told him to knock it off, he would just resume. Hopkins
had more clinches and smirks on his face than actual punches
landing, while Holt was bull rushing in, landing hooks to the
body and head for the full fight. Hopkins caught Holt at the end
of the eleventh that stunned him, but Holt closed the final
round by simply out boxing the lesser experienced Hopkins. Final
scores were 117-111, 116-112 (note the wideness), and an absurd
115-113 for Hopkins by Julie Lederman. Who knows what she was
watching.

Absolutely Ridiculous Robbery Handed To Toney |
|
James Toney won one of the biggest gift decisions
ever handed in boxing tonight when he only appeared to win about
3 rounds against late substitute Fres Oquendo. As expected, the
fight was about as exciting as watching paint dry as Toney
fought off the ropes doing much of nothing while the awkward and
horrendous style of Oquendo was simply landing too much to give
Toney any rounds. Oquendo landed jabs and looping right hands
the entire 12 rounds, staggering Toney on more than one
occasion, yet receiving a point deduction in round 8 for hitting
behind the head. Toney looked ready to go down twice in the
fight and extremely lackluster as he has consistently shown in
this latter portion of his career at heavyweight. Oquendo swept
the final 2 rounds in impressive fashion, knocking Toney into
the ropes to close the show. Final scores were 116-110 for
Oquendo, and 115-112, 1114-113 for Toney. Oquendo was ahead the
entire night and Toney went home with his early Christmas gift.

Dr. "Steel Hammer" Turns "Rock" Into Pebbles
Klitschko Gets 7th Round TKO |
|
Lennox Lewis said it best on the HBO telecast,
"This is Hasim Rahman at his worst!" Combine that with Wladimir
Klitschko landing almost 50% of his punches over 7 rounds and
you have a recipe for disaster. Put it in the oven and it's
Wladimir by TKO at the 44 second mark of round 7.

Adamek Takes IBF Cruiserweight Title |
|
By Tim Donaldson
Photos: David Martin Warr - DKP
Steve “USS” Cunningham must have thought
that he was fighting back in Europe again as he entered
the Prudential Arena in Newark. The then champion was
treated to a mix of cheers and boos as he approached the
ring. Just minutes before, Adamek was treated with loud
cheers and applause as he entered the ring from a crowd
that must have been 70 percent Polish. Looking out over
the crowd, you could not help but see the large sea of
red and white, the colors of the flag of Poland,
covering the not only the stands of the arena but also
the majority of the floor seats. They wore red and white
jackets and held up scarves with Polska written on them.
Some had even gone to the trouble of painting their
faces. They were here to see Adamek do what he does
best, fight. And that is exactly what Adamek did.

Post Fight Report :
Cunningham Rallies For Rematch Against Adamek |
|
By Tim Donaldson
In the post fight press conference, Steve Cunningham began a
campaign for a rematch with Tomasz Adamek.
Cunningham said that he was disappointed with the results of the
fight. “Anytime you lose a belt, you should be disappointed, or
you’re crazy.” But he did not feel that he necessarily performed
poorly, noting that “We (he and his team) showed the heart of
ten champions in there. In the name of Jesus Christ, I did what
I did. I do what I do and will continue to do it Adamek caught
me with some very good flash knock downs. They were flash. I
wasn’t hurt. I can take a punch obviously. He’s a good fighter.
I knew he was a good fighter. But I knew we could out box him. I
fell into his plan a few times. But I knew the audience would
love to see a rematch.”

Kendall Holt, Demetrius Hopkins Conference Call |
|
By Tim Donaldson
Holt and Hopkins traded jabs on December 11, in a conference
call press conference, and Bob Arum did what he does best,
promote. Hopkins, who originally was to fight on the undercard,
has taken the place of Ricardo Torres, who dropped out earlier
in the week.
Hopkins and Holt have met before in the amateurs, most recently
at the Golden Glove quarterfinals in 1999. Hopkins won that
bout. Speaking about this, Hopkins took credit for Holt’s
success. Hopkins noted, “We sparred a couple times… and I know
for a fact he learned a lot from me.”

Captian Huck To Return January 24 |
|
Marco “Captain” Huck (23-1, 18 KOs) will make a
second defence of his European cruiserweight title when he takes
on Vadim Safonov in Riesa, Germany on January 24. Huck won the
belt in September with a 12th-round TKO victory over Jean Marc
Monrose before stopping Fabio Tuiach in the second round in
October. The 24-year-old is determined to take care of business
against Safonov (21-2, 10 KOs). “Normally I was the one who was
chasing champions and titles,” Huck said. “But now everybody is
hunting me and trying to deprive me of my European title. That
does not make a difference to me, though. I do not focus on my
opponents´ strengths but just my own.”
Huck is eager to get the new year off to a successful start. “I
have high ambitions for 2009,” he added. “That is why I want to
defeat Safonov convincingly. I want to keep improving. Of course
it is my goal to fight for the world title again.”

The second week of The Contender saw the Blue Team really take
control with their second victory in as many tries. But before
their win, they already held all the power, as they got to
choose who they would send to the ring next, and who the
opponent from the Gold Team would be. Team Gold was trying to
figure out who might be chosen, and they decided it would
probably be between Tim Flamos and Jon Schneider.

Post Fight Quotes From Newark, NJ |
|
Steve Cunningham: “My game plan tonight
was to box. I thought I had him in the fourth, so I went for a
knockout and he caught me. It cost me the fight. That’s boxing.
“He didn’t hit that hard. They were all flash knockdowns. Even
though I never felt I was hurt, you’ve got to give Adamek credit
for the knockdowns. Other than that, I put in some good work. I
did my best. The judges favored Tomasz tonight, but I’d love to
do it again.”
Tomasz Adamek: “I knew after the first round that he
could not hurt me. I knew I could go forward always, like I did
against Paul Briggs in the two fights I had with him. Even when
his punches connected, I was okay. I also knew that every
straight right would put him down and they did. I have faster
hands and I could always hit him with one more shot than he
could hit me with.

(On having to face a new opponent on less than a

HOLT: It’s more mentally than anything but with the type
of style that I have I’m able to adapt. Champions overcome
adversity and this is adversity. I’ve overcome adversity before.
I’m kind of used to this. This is what champions do: Adapt and
overcome.
HOPKINS: It’s not going to be difficult for me. It shows
that I’m a good fighter and that I’m a true champion. It’s a
challenge. I love challenges. It’s what makes great champions.

Adamek Takes Title Over Cunningham With
Split Decision In Fight Of The Year Candidate |
|
Tomasz Adamek (now 36-2, 24 KO's) won the IBF
Cruiserweight Title from Steve Cunningham in a battle that for
the full twelve rounds saw back and forth action, and contained
three knockdowns. When's the rematch?
In round 1, both men came out cautious. Cunningham keeping away
landing a few jabs and right hands to take the round.
In round 2, a completely different tone came about as Adamek
caught Cunningham's attention with a left hook to the head. From
that point on it was a back and forth war. Another huge left at
the bell to end the round sent Cunningham down on his back for
the first time in the fight.
In round 3, Cunningham regained his senses and came back
impressively, out boxing Adamek from a distance.
In round 4, Cunningham again started fast and staggered Adamek
to the ropes with a huge right hand. Adamek in real trouble,
staggering all over. Just as the round is about to end and
scores 10-8 for Cunningham, a huge right hand from Adamek out of
nowhere sends Cunningham down for the second time in the fight.
In round 5, Cunningham again came back impressively, landing
long straight rights on Adamek's head, who refuses to budge.
In round 6, Cunningham keeping his distance, doesn't want to mix
it up with Adamek, while jabbing and landing right hands to win
the round.
In round 7, Adamek is just walking straight in with no head
movement, taking all of Cunningham's shots in order to land his
own.
In round 8, a short left hook from Adamek lands flush on
Cunningham's chin and he was immediately in no man's land,
staggering to the ropes for the third ruled knockdown.
Cunningham made it out of the round.
In round 9, Cunningham once again came back to control the
round, until Adamek staggered Cunningham at the end.
In round 10, Cunningham working hard to keep his title, jabbing
and landing huge rights on Adamek's head, which snaps back, but
Adamek keeps moving forward.
In round 11, the two traded for a full round, both tired and
landing big punches in a close action round.
In round 12, Cunningham looked to close the show as Adamek
appeared exhausted and was backing up for the first time in the
fight. Cunningham caught Adamek on the ropes often, sending his
head back.
Final scores were 114-112 for Cunningham and 116-110, 115-112
for Adamek.
Cunningham falls to 21-2 with 11 KO's.
Pound4Pound scored the fight 114-112 for Cunningham.

“The Standing Eight Count”
Dear Oscar, I Take It All Back |
|
By Dave Wilcox
For those who read my column, I want both of you to pay close
attention. For sixteen years, I have been the Kool-Aid sipping
Oscar De La Hoya apologist that in public I would ridicule. As I
noted in my column entitled “Dear Oscar, I Quit” a month ago, I
have always made excuses for “The Golden Boy” as it relates to
his Machismo and ring skills.
Over the last four years, I have written no less than five
articles in defense of Oscar. That was until the day I read that
it was official that he would slap us all on the face and take a
fight with an Umpa–Lumpa by the name of Manny Pacquiao. How dare
he?, I thought. All this hard work I’ve put in to making excuses
for him over the years and now he takes a fight against someone
who he can’t possibly lose to.

Margarito vs. Mosley - "The Battle Of LA" |
|
|
Photo: Bret "The Threat" Newton
Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley held a
press conference today at the Staples Center where they
will fight on January 24th in a fight that has many
people second guessing their outcome. Will it end up
like Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya where one typically younger
and in-prime fighter beats the older,
not-quite-at-his-best-anymore, fighter? Or will it end
up like Hopkins vs. Pavlik where the older fighter beat
the younger fighter? And while styles do make fights,
this is one that will certainly be entertaining while it
lasts, which ever way it goes.
Margarito: "Shane Mosley is one of the greatest
fighters and it's an honor to have an opportunity to be
in the ring with someone at his level. I'm going to put
on a good show and give my best to show that I am the
best fighter on January 24th."
Mosley: "Margarito's a very strong fighter, but
speed kills and you're going to see what Shane Mosley
does best come fight night. There's going to be a new
champion that night."

Pacquiao/De La Hoya - Afterthoughts |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
As almost everyone knows by now, boxing fan or not, Oscar, the
“Golden Boy” De La Hoya was buried Saturday night by the pride
of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao. I did not get the chance to
watch the fight until last night, and I made sure that I did not
know the results. Hell, I might be late in watching, but I
wanted it to be a first time experience anyway.

Billy's Blog & Mail Pouch (Part 1)
One Reader Comes Clean On His Oscar Prediction
Could Anyone In The Media PLEASE Do The Same? |
|
By William Trillo
Well here we are more than 2 days out from Pacquiao's destruction
of Oscar and I have yet to see one of the so called experts come
clean and say he was wrong about his over used theory about
Oscar being too big and he will destroy Manny in a joke of a
fight.
I mean, c'mon guys, lay your bloated ego's aside and admit you
don't know what the heck you are talking about. Most of us
already know it, but it would be great for guys like Chubby to
admit they are nothing more than spoon fed shills and move on.
It would be a cleansing experience.
On that same note I don't want to hear anyone say that they
really wanted Manny to win even though they picked Oscar.

Billy's Blog & Mail Pouch Featuring Bret "The Threat"
Absurd Email Calls Pacquiao "An Average Fighter" |
|
By Bret "The Threat" Newton
We wouldn't normally subject our readers to a low level I.Q.
email such as the one we're about to show you, but we felt it
was at least good enough for a laugh, even though we did decide
to respond to it. Feel free to
send your own responses
to us regarding the following email we received after the
Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya fight:
From: BEBLACK99
Ok, I'm going to give you the heads up on The Pacman also, Why
is everyone calling this great fighter like they did Cotto, tell
me Who other then Great fighers that were so close to retiring
the rocking chair was in the ring with them. Manny is Average
nothing more the same thing i told you about Cotto. Now here's
the thing he' is being guilded pass all the really good
fighters. and Don't even mention Mayweather he would knock
Pacman out cold, why? Pacman has no defense and the only speed
he has is because his opponents had none. would Ricky Hatton be
a good fight? I would take a guess that Hatton would Knock him
out. Boxing is really in desperate need of a star any star even
if that star is fighting dull fighters and not the competion.
boxing has come to the point where they will by pass look over
and make any excuse to draw a crown even if it's a really washed
up Oscar, wow. You would be considered a very wise man if you
would step out of the box and go on some bold statements that
unless Pacman can beat someone we would consider a true
contender then he's not great or good he's just an average
fighter.

Cunningham vs. Adamek:
Versus Bringing Boxing Back To The People |
|
By Tim Donaldson
On Thursday, December 11, the Versus network will air two
championship fights. The main event features IBF cruiserweight
champion Steve “USS” Cunningham defending his title against
challenger Tomasz “Goral” Adamek. Versus will also air defending
IBF bantamweight champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko against his
mandatory IBF challenger, William “Chirizo” Gonzalez.
Growing up, I remember watching good fights on regular
television. I am dating myself, but I remember watching fighters
like Muhammed Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman to name a
few. That is what sparked my interest in the sport. However, as
I got older, and cable television took over, the good fights
disappeared from regular television. And, in the past few
decades, you really only got to see the good fights if you were
willing to pay for a premium channel or Pay-Per-View.

Cunningham vs. Adamek Workout Quotes |
|
Boxers preparing for the International Boxing
Federation world-championship doubleheader on Thursday at
Prudential Center—the first title card in Newark in 60 years
(VERSUS 8 p.m. ET/PT)—participated in a media workout today.
IBF cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-1, 11
KOs), from Philadelphia, said his Polish-born opponent Tomasz
Adamek shouldn’t place too much emphasis on the fact he was able
to defeat former undisputed cruiserweight world champion O’Neil
“Supernova” Bell in April.

He Will Rock You |
|
By William Trillo
Buddy you’re an old man poor man
Pleadin’ with your eyes
Gonna be a big man some day
You got blood on your face
You big disgrace
Kickin’ your can all over the place
Brian May/Queen
Manny Pacquiao marching out to the Queen song, “We Will Rock
You” was the most prophetic entry song for a boxer you will ever
see or hear.
EVER!
What Oscar De La Hoya was about to experience was without a
doubt the worst 24 minutes inside the squared circle that The
Golden Boy has been on the receiving end of. In turn, the
majority of the so called experts in the media watched their
prediction of Oscar being too big and strong for the
“diminutive” Filipino blow up in their collective faces.
