So here we are on the precipice of 2009 and while the "real"
boxing experts have already presented their mock awards and
Raider fan is still celebrating the victory over Tampa Bay as if
they won the Super Bowl because they kept John (Chuckie) Gruden
and his Bucs out of the playoffs, I decided maybe this year I
should take a shot at the best of the best...so here we go.
Unlike every other "Best Of" list I am not going to bore you
with an abundance of also ran awards. This is a Best Of the Year
list. Not the top 10 or 20, no honorable mentions and no runners
up, no best spitting of the mouthpiece etc etc. I don't know
about you but trying to read every bio on every fighter who made
these ad infinitum lists left me not reading many of those lists
before I passed out in a comatose stupor.

Q & A with Steve “USS” Cunningham |

On December 11, I was fortunate enough to be witness to one of
the great fights in the history of boxing. The fight between
Steve “USS” Cunningham and Tomasz “Goral” Adamek resulted in a
split decision with Adamek holding the IBF Cruiserweight Title.
I recently had the privilege to speak to Steve Cunningham and
get his thoughts on the fight and find out why he believes that
there should be a rematch.
P4P: How does it make you feel that so many people all
around the world are calling for a rematch?
Steve: It makes me feel much better than most the other
fights. We’ve been fighting all over the world, and the
American fan base has finally got a chance to see us, and to see
what type of fighter I am. We’re able to do everything, box, go
toe to toe, show heart, show some discipline. I’m very happy to
be able to get another chance to be champion again.

Victor Ortiz Named ESPN.com's Prospect Of The Year |
|
It was announced today that Golden Boy Promotions
prospect Victor Ortiz was named ESPN.com's Prospect of the Year.
The rising star had a spectacular 2008, racking up three wins by
knockout in three fights and will set his sights on a world
title fight in 2009. Earlier this month, Ortiz was also named
Sports Illustrated's Prospect of the Year.
Other Golden Boy Promotions fighters that were tabbed as "Future
Stars" by ESPN.com include (in alphabetical order) Danny Garcia,
Daniel Jacobs, James Kirkland and Carlos Velasquez.

first local appearance in five years on Saturday, January 31st
in the main event of “HOMECOMING”, an evening of world class
professional boxing at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati,
presented by TMAX Events and TKO Boxing Promotions.

ON THIS DAY IN 1980, Bangkok, Thailand:
Khaosai Galaxy KO’d Sangsung
Sithkempet in the 2nd round of a non-title bout. Galaxy’s 2nd pro bout.
1956, New York:
Carlos Ortiz won a 10 round decision
over Gale Kerwin in a non-title bout. Carlos
Ortiz (61-7-1) then 20 years old and in his 2nd year
fighting professionally would go on to become Jr
Welterweight Champion and Lightweight Champion. Ortiz is
considered one of the “greats” of the Lightweight
Division. Reigning twice 1962-65 and 1965-68.
1952, Coral Gables, Florida:
Danny Nardico TKO’d Jake LaMotta in the
8th round. Lamotta’s corner stopped this fight after LaMotta was down in the 7th. This
fight was of course near the end of Hall of Famer
LaMotta’s career.
1941, Vichy, France:
Marcel Cerdan KO’d Robert Seidel in the
3rd round of a non-title bout. Marcel Cerdan (106-4-0) Middleweight Champion
from 1948-49, and Hall of Famer, was one of Europes
greatest fighters in the 30’s and 40’s.

too focused on the task at hand to pay much attention to either.
Preparing for his next fight on Friday, January 23rd, the
undefeated junior welterweight hasn’t stopped training through
the holidays. Fighting five times in 2008, Popoca’s last two
bouts have ended in crushing first round knockouts, further
cementing his status for Chicago fight fans as must-see events.

Beibut Shumenov Hottest Prospect In Boxing |

Former Kazakhstan Olympian Beibut Shumenov (7-0,
5 KOs), fresh off of his impressive 10-round decision victory
against Columbian knockout artist Epifanio “Diamente” Mendoza
(28-6-1, 24 KOs), arguably is the most ambitious, fastest-rising
prospect in boxing.
Fighting only 13 months as a professional unbeaten light
heavyweight Shumenov has already captured three championship
belts – WBC Asian Boxing Council, WBO Asia Pacific and PABA. His
most defining victory to date was a one-sided victory by
12-round decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108) against former WBC
title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs) this past
August in Kazakhstan.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada,
arguably one of the most decorated amateur boxers of the 21st
century, is in many ways the United States’ top heavyweight hope
to bring home a world title belt.
Estrada possesses the quickest hands and feet in the heavyweight
division, along with solid “whiskers,” and he has also shown
steady improvement in the power game. All told, though, he’s
perceived by many promoters, managers and fighters as too risky
to fight, largely because he can box the ears off of anybody in
the world who weighs 200 pounds or more.

Campaign for Cunningham-Adamek
Rematch Gathers Momentum |

On December 11th 2008 one of the fights of the
decade took place in Newark, New Jersey between the then
reigning International Boxing Federation cruiserweight king,
Steve 'USS' Cunningham from Philadelphia, PA and Polish born
expat, Tomasz 'Goral' Adamek, from Jersey City, NJ.
After 12 action packed rounds, which saw the then Champ, Steve
'USS' Cunningham put on the canvas three times by flash
knockdowns, the crown passed onto the new Champion, Tomasz
'Goral' Adamek, by a close split decision. Boxing fans around
the world were treated to an amazing fight, and whilst many saw
the fight result differently none were unhappy as the result was
that close. Calls for a rematch were instant, not just by 'USS"
Cunningham but also the media and fans alike.

the year came at the end of the IBF Super Middleweight
title bout between Champ Lucien Bute vs. Librado
Andrade. With time running out Andrade floored Bute but
with the help of the ref Bute was saved.

“We’re looking to make “FIGHT NIGHT AT THE PLAZA” a bi-monthly
event starting in January. The Plaza Hotel and Casino has a
great tradition of supporting boxing with numerous future world
champions having fought there including Antonio Tarver, Sergio

Team Sauerland will reconsider its plan to offer
Evander Holyfield a rematch against WBA heavyweight champion
Nikolai Valuev following Tommy Brooks´ outrageous remarks in the
press. The coach of the 46-year-old boxing legend, who lost a
close majority decision by the scores of 116-112, 115-114 and
114-114, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I think it was
just some home cooking for a promoter’s fighter. I think
somebody was just greasing somebody’s palms.”

The World Boxing Council’s Board of Governors has
voted on the awards for the “Best of 2008,” and the results are
as follows:
BOXER OF THE YEAR
Manny Pacquiao, Philippines: Manny won the World Boxing Council
super featherweight world title by decision against defending
champion Juan Manuel Marquez in March, then won the WBC
lightweight world title by TKO against defending champion David
Diaz three months later in June. Manny finished the year in
December with a sensational TKO win against Oscar De La Hoya in
the welterweight division.

As a spectacular 2008 boxing campaign comes to an
end, Golden Boy Promotions is pleased to congratulate three of
its top fighters on the awards they received from the
world-renowned and respected Sports Illustrated.
Named on SI.com's 2008 Boxing Awards list were future Hall of
Famer Bernard Hopkins, whose stirring victory over Kelly Pavlik
on October 18, 2008 was voted Upset of The Year; pound-for-pound
superstar Juan Manuel Marquez, whose knockout of Joel Casamayor
on September 13, 2008 earned Knockout of The Year honors; and
rising star Victor Ortiz, who went 3-0, 3 KO's in 2008 was
celebrated as SI's Prospect of The Year.

Jerry Quarry KO’d Ray Crear in the 3rd
round of a non title bout. Jerry
Quarry (53-9-4) began his pro career in 1965 and was a
highly ranked contender during the Frazier, Ali,
Foreman, Norton era of great Heavyweights in the 60’s
and 70’s.
1960, Tokyo, Japan:
Fighting Harada won a 10 round Decision
over Hiroyuki Ebihara in a non-title bout. Fighting Harada (55-7-0) would become Flyweight
Champion from 1962-63 and Bantamweight Champion from
1965-68 and be voted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in
1995.
1934, Paris, France:
Freddie Miller won a 10 round decision over
Panama Al Brown in a non title bout. Freddie Miller (208-28-7) World Featherweight
Champion from 1933-36 and Panama Al Brown (123-18-10)
Bantamweight Champion from 1929-35 were both voted into
Boxing’s Hall of Fame.
1901, Cardiff, Wales:
Jim Driscoll won a 10 round decision
over Joe Ross to win the Wales Featherweight Title. Welshman Jim Driscoll (52-3-6) like
Jimmy Wilde got his start fighting in the Boxing Booths
of the British Isles. Driscoll would become British
world Featherweight Champion from 1912-13, and be voted
into the Boxing Hall of Fame.

press release today...
"This fight between Marquez and Diaz will shake the
lightweight division to its core and truly determine the best
135-pounder in the world," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of
Golden Boy Promotions.
So does that mean Oscar lost to the third best 135 pounder in
the World?
Does it mean Oscar is still that punchy from his recent loss?
Or does it mean he has truly retired from fighting and has
become a full fledged & full time promoter who is
full of hot air (read B.S.)?

Munroe shared the spotlight on Thursday night at Dublin's City
University with Commonwealth bantam ruler Jason Booth and Irish
Olympic hero Darren Sutherland, who made a triumphant
professional debut at super middleweight on a Frank Maloney
promotion.
Munroe weathered a fast start off the blocks by Italian champion
Fabrizio Trotta, who proved his near miss at the European Union
belt in June was no fluke. Trotta showed superb countering
skills, punishing Munroe for every miss but when the European
titlist began found his rhythm by the third round, Trotta's luck
was about to run out.

Valuev Gets Biggest Robbery Of All Time!

In a fight that made last weeks Klitschko vs.
Rahman appear like "Fight of the Year", Nicolai Valuev won one
of the worst and most disgraceful decisions ever handed out in
the entire sport of boxing. Just to let you know how bad the
scoring was, Valuev's corner told him he needed a knockout to
win. Valuev did much of nothing and had more arm stretching and
adjusting of his trunks than actual punching. Evander simply
bounced around doing little himself, but the one to three
punches he landed every round were simply more than anything
Valuev could possibly have done to win. Absolutely ridiculous.
In round 1, Evander came out with his strategy of boxing and
moving, keeping away. Nothing much happened in this round.
In round 2, Evander still on his toes, threw and landed three
left hooks. Valuev doing nothing.
In round 3, Evander landed one right hook. Valuev did nothing.
In round 4, Evander opened up with a combination at the final 30
seconds. Valuev did nothing.
In round 5, Valuev was stretching his arms by punching down.
That's the only punches he was throwing.
In round 6, Valuev threw a play jab and adjusted his trunks a
few times. (I guess that wins rounds?)
In round 7, Both fighters landed one right hand each. (ok, an
even round).
In round 8, Valuev had his best and only round of the fight
where he actually tried to throw a few right hands.
In round 9, Evander jumping in a few times only to be held by
Valuev once hit with a punch.
In round 10, Evander lands one right. Valuev does nothing.
In round 11, another boring round of nothing.
Between rounds, a cornerman for Valuev told him, "You need to
knock this guy out."
In round 12, Evander landed a big combination to Valuev's head
to close the show. Valuev did nothing.
Final scores were atrocious, 114-114, 116-112 and 115-114. This
was one of the hugest injustices in boxing history. There have
been some bad calls in boxing, but this one clearly takes the
cake as an easy to score 11 rounds to 1 was scored for the
opposite fighter.
In reality, Evander Holyfield won his 5th heavyweight title and
became the oldest heavyweight to win a title. Congratulations Evander,
we saw it.

The third week of competition brought by far the most active
fight we have seen, and at the end of the series it will
probably still remain as one of the most energetic match-ups.
The Blue Team remained in control after winning their second
fight in a row, and the Gold’s trainer Tommy Brooks was not at
all happy about it.
But before any competition began, the winner of last weeks’
fight, Alfredo Escalera, Jr. was awarded his gold glove necklace
and was given the opportunity to place his name in the spot
where he would like to fight for round two. Escalera decided he
did not want to face the winner of the first fight, Felix Cora,
Jr. He also said he would like a bit more time to rest, and slid
his name into the second group of fighters.

champion of all time. The living legend will try to deprive the

him in Zurich on Saturday night. “I am in great shape,”
Holyfield said during today´s media work-out at the Swissotel.
“There have been many great fighters in the history of boxing

Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing has announced the
signing of Phoenix, Arizona's 24-year-old light middleweight
contender Jesus "El Martillo" Gonzalez (24-1, 13KO). The
Mexican- American southpaw, whose nickname translates into "The
Hammer" in English, was one of the most decorated amateurs to
ever come out of Arizona, and was widely considered to be
America's top medal contender for the 2004 Olympic Games before
Gonzalez opted to bypass the games and turn pro. Gonzalez's
decorated amateur career includes wins over 2004 Olympic gold

Grinberg Fighting Hard To Recover
From Surgery And Stroke |

After some frightening days that included open
heart surgery and a stroke while having surgery, renowned boxing
manager Boris Grinberg is out of intensive care for the first
time in two weeks and is resting comfortably in a rehab center.
Grinberg, the manager of former heavyweight champion Sultan
Ibragimov, is expected to make a full recovery.
“We were worried for a while, but now that Boris is out of
intensive care, we’re pleased to say that he is on his way to
recovery,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole
Warriors Boxing. “It’s an early Christmas present for all of
Boris’ family and friends.”

At the boring world heavyweight championship bout
between Wladimir Klitschko and Hasim Rahman the only man who
brought some excitement to the show was former undisputed world
cruiserweight champion David Haye who showed up in Mannheim,
Germany, to call out both Klitschko brothers.
Now Haye claims that he came to an agreement with Vitali
regarding a bout in June 2009. But before that the older
Klitschko bro has to defend his WBC championship against no. 1
contender Juan Carlos Gomez. Now the “Black Panther” addresses
Haye: “I understand how this kid feels and what he thinks. In
fact we have a lot in common. We both used to be the best
cruiserweights in the world, now we both want to become world
heavyweight champions and get rid of those annoying Ukrainians.
But, David, I got one advice for you: Keep your hands off
Vitali. He’s mine. You can go after Wladimir if you want. He
will be easier to handle for you anyways. If you desperately
want to fight Vitali you will have to wait until I stripped his
belt from him. After we dethroned both Klitschko sisters we can
go on and find out one on one who is the best heavyweight
fighter in the world if you want. It will be my honour and
pleasure to beat you up to become undisputed heavyweight

War Of Words Between Holt & Hopkins
Fails To Produce Excitement In The Ring |

Thursday’s verbal exchanges turned out to be nothing more than
talk as neither fighter was able to produce a championship level
fight Saturday night in Atlantic City. For those who came
expecting to see the Kendall Holt of Holt, Torres I and II, they
left disappointed. And Demetrius Hopkins failed to deliver the
“better fight” that he had promised.
The first half of the fight looked more like a club fight
between two newly turned pro fighters. Although Hopkins hit
first, he failed to follow through with anything significant.
Holt spent much of the round, watching as Hopkins danced around
the ring. Near the end of the round, a woman in the audience
yelled, “What are you waiting for Kendall?”. Those words summed
up the feelings of many in attendance.

Yuri Foreman of Belarus fought James Moore of Ireland in the
co-feature from Atlantic City, Saturday night in a fight that
started with all the spectacle of two great fighters meeting to
battle for supremacy. Moore’s fans sang and chanted as he
marched in behind the Irish flag. Foreman’s fans were no less
silent when he entered although the boos of Moore’s fans could
be heard. Foreman looked like he meant to do business as he
entered the ring, shadowboxing and jumping up and down as the
announcement of the fighters were made.

Cabazon, CA - The James Toney bout staged
Saturday evening at the windswept, wintry Morongo Casino
was originally billed, “Now or Never.” The slogan was
based on the fact that it was still another crossroads
fight for the 40 year old Toney as well as his original
opponent, Tony Thompson. Thompson showed only toughness
in his July KO loss against the leader of the division,
Wladimir Klitschko and nothing more so it was
questionable why the Washington, DC fighter was selected
for a possible return to contention. The fight nearly
turned into “Never” when whispers circulated that the
fight was about to be called off just two weeks prior to
the December 13 date. The reality came to the fore that
Thompson suffered with a case of bronchitis which KO’d
him from the opportunity to fight for the less than
coveted IBA and NABO titles, so the scramble was on for
an opponent to keep the card alive.
