Another year in boxing has come to an end and it’s time for
Pound4Pound to chime in with their picks for the best of 2016.
It is our pleasure to have Nat Gottlieb as one of our
contributing experts. Gottlieb, who also writes for HBO,
selected his picks and we are honored to share them with you.
Fighter of the Year
Roman Gonzalez
It’s hard for the little guys in boxing to garner the attention
of the higher weight-class fighters, but at 46-0 with 38 KO’s,
it’s difficult not to give “Chocolatito” his just due. First he
scored a dominant victory over rising contender McWilliams
Arroyo. Then he moved up to junior bantamweight and took the
title from previously unbeaten Carlos Cuadras. It was Gonzalez’
fourth division championship, and solidified his spot as the top
fighter in boxing.

Among ESPN's "Top 20 Prospects Of 2016" |
|
Following a successful 2016, stablemates Ivan
"The Beast" Baranchyk and Ivan "The Volk" Golub were included on
Dan Rafael's ESPN list of "Top 20 Prospects of the Year". Both
Ivans finished the year winning four fights apiece to bring
their records to an identical 13-0, with 10 knockouts for
Baranchyk and 11 for Golub. It was a year that increased their
visibility on the national stage with two appearances each on
SHOWTIME's "ShoBox: The New Generation" series.

Skoglund Expresses Disappointment With EBU Decision |
|
Erik Skoglund has been left bitterly disappointed
following the European Boxing Union’s (EBU) decision to reverse
their ruling and allow current light heavyweight champion Robert
Stieglitz a voluntary defence of his title.
The EBU had previously ordered Stieglitz to face his mandatory
challenger Skoglund. The fight was set to go to purse bids after
promoters Team Sauerland and SES Promotion couldn’t agree terms
when suddenly the EBU announced that they had voted to allow
Stieglitz a voluntary defence.

Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) attended the Dallas Cowboys
vs. Detroit Lions game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.
Prior to kickoff, Cotto hit the field to present fellow
Roc Nation Sports’ family Dez Bryant with signed boxing
gloves. Cotto also had signed gloves on hand for former
Cowboys’ running back and NFL’s all-time leading rusher
Emmitt Smith. Cotto joined Cowboys’ owner, president and

remainder of the game. Cotto had signed gloves for Jerry

As we all try to slow down to enjoy a few quiet moments in the
company of our loved ones, thinking about what happened this
year and planning on what we wish to do for 2017, it is a great
opportunity to simply meditate and reflect on our own actions
and what can we personally do to make the difference in our
lives and the lives of others. It is so common that we get lost
in the day-to-day pressures, deadlines, worries, excessive work,
travel, and eternal use of the cell phone. We often forget to
look at today, to realize what we have, who is next to us, how
fortunate we are to have health, to be alive, to have our loved
ones close. We forget to appreciate and cherish what is there.
Available with hindsight, our reflections can only give us
memories, those that build over the weeks, months and years, and
we look back and understand that we let those precious times go
by without knowing it.

GATINEAU, Canada — The Montrealer Russian
Artur Beterviev promised to his fans and his promoter
that the Argentinian Isidro Ranoni Prieto would be
unable to kill his dream, the dream to dispute soon a
world championship bout, and he said the truth.
Friday evening in the ring of the Casino of Lac Leamy
(beside Ottawa, the Canadian Capital), Beterviev stayed
undefeated in beating Prieto by TKO in the first round
in a NABA North American championship and a WBC Silver
light heavyweight championship. Beterviev wanted
absolutely to keep his perfect record, 11-0-0, 11 wins
by KO or TKO, and he achieved it.

GATINEAU, Canada - Two years after his divorce with the GYM
Group to join the InterBox Group, the Montrealer Jean Pascal,
the former WBC light heavyweight champion of the world,
confirmed his divorce with the InterBox Group.
The vice-president of the InterBox, Antonin Décarie, confirmed
also the news Friday afternoon. “We been obliged to put a end to
our association with Jean, because he was not agree with our
plans for his next bouts, for his future in boxing, said Décarie.
Then, we have decided to destroy his contract with us, and he is
totally free to join the organization of his choice.”

Decorated Amateur Boxer Mohammad Rabii
To Make Pro Debut Feb. 18 At Home In Morocco |
|
Moroccan amateur boxing sensation Mohammed Rabii
will make his long anticipated professional debut February 18,
fighting at home in Casablanca, at the Complexe de Sportif
Mohammed V Arena.
The 23-year-old Rabii represented Morocco at this year's Olympic
Games in Brazil, where he captured a bronze medal in the
welterweight division, losing a disputed decision (0-3) in the
semifinals to Uzebek boxer Shakhram Giyasov, who then lost (0-3)
in the championship final to Daniyar Yeleussinov. Rabii had
defeated Yeleussinov, of Kazakhstan, in the gold-medal
championship bout of the AIBA World Amateur Championships. An
average of 6 million Moroccans viewed each of Rabbi's Olympic
matches, providing testimony to his celebrity status back home.

An opponent has been confirmed for Patrick
Nielsen’s (28-1, 14 KOs) ring return on January 21 at the Struer
Energi Park. The Danish super middleweight star will take on the
big punching Columbian southpaw Beibi Berrocal (17-3, 16 KOs).
After twelve months out of the ring, Nielsen is back in action,
and will be aiming to start the New Year on a high, as he looks
to kick-start a World title assault in 2017 with a statement win
against the WBC World-ranked contender.

As I was about to board my flight from Miami back home
to Mexico City, my phone rang. It was Dr. Margaret
Goodman from VADA, and she notified me that an adverse
finding was confirmed on an Alexander Povetkin
antidoping test for an anabolic steroid, just 20 hours
before the scheduled fight versus Bermane Stiverne for
the WBC interim heavyweight title. As I sat down on the
plane and explained this to my wife, Christiane, I was
feeling numb. I was shocked, and the great feeling I was
enjoying just minutes before due to great success of our
convention was completely overshadowed by the terrible
news. Then my wife said, “What a statement this is for
the WBC! This proves the greatness of the Clean Boxing
Program and the commitment to protect the fighters and
the sport.”
