World Awaits Final Press Conference Very Quiet
Well Almost...Floyd's Uncle Babbled Loudly For Bit
Story & Photos By William Trillo
The promo for The Golden Boy Cinco De Mayo show starts
out by saying, "Everyone is talking..."' but that was
not so today as the final press conference for Saturdays
big event was very subdued and well behaved.
That is of course with one exception...Roger Mayweather
who is training his nephew Floyd got on the podium and
before he could start talking about the fight he started
ripping into Oscar's trainer Freddie Roach with reckless
abandon and the few laughs he was getting sounded more
like nervous laughter than anything else and when he
left the stage a collective sigh of relief could be
heard in amongst the crowd and Golden Boy CEO Richard
Schaefer looked relieved to move things along.
As for the fighters themselves, both guys were pretty
cool with very little to say. Floyd spoke first and said
he always knew he would fight Oscar and was well
prepared for this day. Oscar seemed very intense and
focused. His statements were brief and he stared
straight ahead during his time on the mic, not making
eye contact with anyone in the room.
The Hollywood Theatre at The MGM Grand was packed to the
limit with media from all over the World along with
luminaries and fighters from Tommy Lasorda, Shane Mosley
and Floyd Mayweather Sr., who as it turns out was a
guest of non other than De La Hoya.
In the post fight interviews Floyd Jr. claimed Oscar did
this to play with mind, but Oscar was quick to say that
Sr. was invited out of respect for a man who trained him
for 6 years
Oh yes, things were pretty quiet, but there still was a little
game of Poker going on under the surface that could be heard
loud and clear.
