Boxing is not dead, whoever put it on life support and
was ready to pull the plug had better think again. If
this weekends World Awaits, Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd
Mayweather Jr. event proved anything it’s that with the
right promotion and sponsors, big time boxing will
always have a place in the hearts of sports fans in
America and across the globe. I am sure the soon to be
released numbers will attest to that.

The World Wasn't
Awaiting The Undercard
In Fact They Didn't
Care Less
|
|
|
Photos & Report By William Trillo
It's not fair, but being a part of this undercard was a
curse not a blessing, no matter what anyone was trying to
tell you. No one, I repeat, No one had any interest as
to what was going on at the MGM Grand last night until
roughly 8:15 PM on Saturday night.
If you need any proof of that all you
need to do is ask anyone who saw the fights, who won the
undercard fights, chances are you will get a blank stare.

The Way Under Undercard |
|
It's common practice for the media members to grab their meal
during the early bouts and sit in the media room, all the while
keeping an eye on the TV screens in the house to keep up on all
the action in the ring. Call it killing to birds with one stone,
or feeding your face while watching the fights...whatever. The
point I am trying to make is the TV screens in the media room
will always keep you on top of the events going on a few doors
down...well almost always.

ERROR IN DELAHOYA/MAYWEATHER SCORECARD? |
|
Panic in the press room moments ago
revealed an error in one of the scorecards that had everyone in
a huff and taking pictures of the official card. After carefully
looking over everything, it was announced "the decision
stands"...so far.
Update:
It appears one judge scored every round for the wrong
color corner. So far they've said it's "not going to
matter", while the big commissioner is coming down to
have a look....
New Update:
The mistake is on one card alone. What is being called
an "honest mistake" is the corner color was hand written
wrong for one card's column. The Red and Blue that
distinguished each fighter to score was opposite of what
it was supposed to be.
Also, Richard Schaeffer is upset that two judges gave
Oscar the final round and one judge gave it to Floyd.
Had that judge given it to Oscar like the other two, it
would have been scored a draw. Schaeffer is also upset
that no one from the WBC or from the state commission is
there to answer all the questions surrounding the
controversy.
Final Outcome:
The scoring is the same. The outcome is the same.
The color for each corner was listed wrong. DeLaHoya
fought out of the Red Corner and Mayweather out of the
Blue yet the scorecards listed the opposite, however all
cards read the right scores.

Mayweather Takes Split Decision Win
Oscar Ahead After 7, But Floyd Sweeps Final 5 Rounds |
|
|
Photo: Marlene Marquez
Floyd Mayweather (now 38-0, 24 KO's) won
a split decision over Oscar DeLaHoya to take the WBC
Super Welterweight title. A fight that Oscar tried his
best and Floyd was reluctant to exchange in that
received boos to the winner and cheers for the former
champion.
Here's the round by round in a relatively easy to score
fight:
Round 1:
Floyd starts with the jab and run technique. Oscar lands
two low blows.
Round to Floyd
Round 2:
Oscar becomes busier, Floyd gets tagged on the ropes.
Round to Oscar
Round 3:
A close round, a right from Floyd and a left at the end
of the round lands flush.
Round to Floyd
Round 4:
Oscar lands a non stop body attack on Floyd against the
topes. A left at the end punctuates the round for Oscar.
Round to Oscar
Round 5:
They trade for once and Oscar gets buckles by a chopping
right hand on the inside. Floyd fighting on the ropes
wins the biggest round.
Round to Floyd
Round 6:
Oscar bounces back and stays busy, landing the jab.
Floyd on the ropes again.
Round to Oscar
Round 7:
Oscar busier again, Floyd not offering much gives up the
round.
Round to Oscar
Round 8:
Another close round like the 3rd. Oscar jabs and snaps
Floyds head back a few times, but Floyds punching are
more on the mark.
Round to Floyd
Round 9:
Floyd popping the jab and precise punching as Oscar
appears tired for the first time in the fight
Round to Floyd
Round 10:
Oscar getting really tired now, shakes his arms a few
times. Oscar staggered at the end of the right by a
straight right.
Round to Floyd
Round 11:
Oscar fully gave up on the jab that worked so well for
him. Oscar very tired and taking pop-shots by Floyd.
Oscar staggers Floyd at the end of the round with a
right.
Round to Floyd.
Round 12:
The two trade at the end of a round Oscar was getting
beat to the punch in.
Round to Floyd
116-112, 8 ROUNDS TO 4 FOR FLOYD MAYWEATHER.
Official scores were 115-113 for DeLaHoya, 116-112 and
115-113 for Floyd.
Juarez Gets Gift Decision After Putting Crowd To Sleep
In a fight that was so boring
and on par with the Holt vs. Arnaoutis fight, Rocky
Juarez (now 27-3, 19 KO's) escaped with a unanimous
decision over Jose Hernandez who appeared to have
outworked Juarez throughout the entire fight. Round 2's
right hand from Juarez that put Hernandez down was the
highlight of the fight, a round Hernandez was winning
before and after the knockdown. Juarez showed very
little motivation and desire in this fight, put
apparently that wins you fights at the MGM in Las Vegas.
This fight was such a snoozer that Larry Merchant did an
entire interview with Floyd Mayweather Sr. during an
entire round of the fight that contained no commentary
about the action inside the ring whatsoever. Final
scores were 115-112, 116-111 and a whopping 117-110.
That's 3 rounds to Hernandez in a fight that Juarez did
barely anything. Hernandez falls to 22-4 with 14
KO's.
Bautista Overcomes Knockdown With Unanimous Win
In a fight of two undefeateds that had just about
everything you could ask from, from multiple knockdowns
by both, to headbutts, cuts, lop blows and point
deductions, Rey Bautista (now 23-0, 17 KO's) and Sergio
Medina gave a good fight to start the PPV event off.
From the opening round, it was clear that Medina's style
was a bit sloppy and awkward and didn't seem to mesh
well with Bautista's well schooled footwork. Medina
would run in with both feet and flail his hands away,
and what may have looked amateurish, worked at times. In
round 2, they both went bombs away, and Bautista
staggered Medina to the ropes. In round 5, following 3
warnings from referee Robert Byrd, a point was deducted
from Bautista for repeated low blows. A cut over the
left eye of Bautista began to bleed. In round 6, a slip
and a punch had Medina on the canvas for the first ruled
knockdown. In round 7 Medina came back and staggered
Bautista. Bautista was in big trouble and all over the
ring and the referee ruled a knockdown saying the ropes
held him up from going down. In round 8, Bautista had a
cut over his other eye from an accidental headbutt, but
he kept calm and was back in the fight. In round 11
Bautista landed a picture perfect right hook that
floored Medina on the seat of his pants. To everyone's
surprise Medina made it up and out of the 12th and final
round. Final scores were 115-109, 116-108, 115-109.
Medina falls to 28-1, with 16 KO's.

A Fans
Perspective -
Oscar vs. Floyd: Which Boy Will Be The Man? |
|
By Carlo Juarez
A lot of different scenarios are being played out in the minds
of boxing fans during the final days leading up to the biggest
fight in years. Some of the conjured scenarios have Kenny
Bayless raising the hand of Floyd Mayweather Jr. His unmatched
hand speed and ring smarts ended up being too much for the
flat-footed Oscar De La Hoya. Other contrived scenarios involve
Kenny Bayless raising the hand of the “Golden Boy” simply
because the weight and power of Oscar proved to be the deciding
factor in the demise of the unblemished reign created by the
“Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr.

How Does Oscar DeLaHoya Beat Floyd Mayweather? |
|
By Robbi Paterson
The most anticipated boxing match in years has everyone buzzing.
"The World Awaits" has served up three months of build-up that
has included an 11 city press tour, weekly conference calls,
HBO's four part 24/7 series, combined with a record live gate of
over $19 million and pay-per-view revenue set to explode like
never before for a non-heavyweight event.
With boxing's hardcore fan licking his lips, and the casual
sports fan wondering what all the fuss is about, the magnitude
of the event is capturing the attention of everyone, including
176 countries around the globe buying into the hype of beaming
it on television
The one question I have been asking myself, how does Oscar De La
Hoya beat Floyd Mayweather?

Oscar Early or Floyd Late |
|
|
By William Trillo
Early Friday morning two of my esteemed
colleagues asked me if I had put up a prediction yet. When I
said no they both chided me for not having an opinion, and
even though I am usually wrong, I figured I might as well
throw you all my thoughts for Oscar vs. Floyd.
After having heard and seen everything
that everyone has to say and after checking out the fighters
and the camps this week I have come to the conclusion that
this fight will play out one of 2 ways.

"The Battle Of The Boys"
The Golden Boy Will Take It To Pretty Boy
|
|
Ringside LA With Johnny Ortiz
On the night of May 5, 2007 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in
Las Vegas, only one fighter will leave the ring as the WBC Super
Welterweight Champion, I can say unequivocally that the champion
who will emerge victorious on this grand night will be “The
Golden Boy,” Oscar De La Hoya. It is my firm belief that Oscar
will be too big, too strong and having faced far bigger, more
talented big name opponents, will have the superior experience
needed to upend the smaller Mayweather. It will be Floyd’s
first fight at the super welterweight limit of 154 pounds while
Oscar has lived at this particular weight for five fights, plus
two of his most recent fights have been at the middleweight
limit of 160 pounds.

DeLaHoya vs. Mayweather Camp Notes: March 28 |
|
For Oscar De La Hoya and his new
trainer Freddie Roach, the honeymoon is over and training camp
is down to business. It is Roach’s first training camp in three
years (last one with Mike Tyson in Phoenix training for the
Danny Williams fight) where he had to leave his Wild Card Gym in
Los Angeles, go on location, work with and set-up camp with just
one fighter. “I am used to being at my gym 10 hours a day
training a bunch of fighters,” said Roach. “Being only with
Oscar in Puerto Rico gives me a chance to concentrate and focus
specifically on the game plan for the fight, something I
wouldn’t have been able to do as well as I can now.”

Mayweather & Mosley Go At It A Little After Lunch |
|
Photos: Bret "The Threat" Newton
Floyd Mayweather offered a possible taste of things to come
during the Oscar DeLaHoya press conference announcing "After
this, I'll kick Mosley's *** too."
The temperature rose after the conference, during the one on one
lunch time. Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley in each others
face, throwing insults at one another, but a final blow by each
had them separated as Floyd left the building:
"When I want to
negotiate a fight with you, I'll be sure to contact your
boss", remarked Floyd as he pointed at Shane's wife, Jin
Mosley.
Mosley returned fire: "I get a piece of
your paycheck for this fight, so that means I'm your
boss. IM YOUR BOSS!"

Written By
William Trillo & Nat Gottlieb
When Oscar De La Hoya announced that Freddie Roach was
going to be his man in the corner on May 5th against
Floyd Mayweather Jr., it didn’t come as a great
surprise, at least to fans. The real surprise was to
Roach's own fighters, whom he was going to abandon at a
time when they had big fights coming up. The fallout has
been big ever since. Click

Mayweather Jr. Is Delusional.
Actually
Thinks He’s The Reason Tickets Sold Out In 3 Hours |
|
By Bret "The Threat" Newton
That’s it, I can’t take
it anymore! First it’s the act he put on after the Baldomir
fight with the fake tears claiming "one more fight", which was
topped with "that’s right, go out on top" by some equally as
delusional fans. Now this. It’s one thing to play or fit the bad
guy role. Floyd can be the villain all he wants. Boxing needs
villains in fact, but when was the last time one of them was so
cocky, so egotistical to believe things that weren’t actually
true, and to still believe it even if you showed them the facts
on paper right in front of their face? Floyd is the only one I
can think of at the moment. Here’s a fighter downing Ricky
Hatton’s ticket sales in America, and yet Floyd himself has
never before sold a fight out. The funny part is that he thinks
it’s his fight, and that he’s the reason it sold out, and puts
an emphasis on "fights" like he does it all the time. When asked
about Hatton, Floyd had this to say: "Don't talk to me about
Ricky Hatton. I'll tell you about Ricky Hatton. He came over to
America and only sold 6,000 tickets. My fights sell out in three
hours. I could go over to England and sell more tickets than
Ricky Hatton. I'm the top dog."

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Tells
His Side
of The Oscar & Floyd Jr. Triangle |
|

Gives Thoughts On Chad Dawson
Too
By Damon “Latinbox” Gonzalez
In one of his
first interviews since Oscar De La Hoya announced Freddie Roach
would be in his corner for the much anticipated Super Bout with
his son Floyd Jr., Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. opened up to
Pound4Pound.com in this exclusive interview. “As far as De La
Hoya and my son is concerned, I stand back and out the way,
that’s were I stand, far away from that, this is my thing and
this is what I do, I train who ever I’m training and now that’s
Chad not De La Hoya or my son. I am able to divide the two and
let it go whatever happens, I am willing to deal with it, with
no distractions. I feel good about what I am doing because at
the end of the day it is Oscar De La Hoya’s money and he don’t
want to come up off of it, and that’s on him. It’s going to be
the chance he takes. Greed don’t overcome common sense, that
right there tells you the story”, said a matter of fact
Mayweather.

It's Freddie Roach In With Oscar |
|
As an earlier report has come to realization,
Freddie Roach will be the man in the corner as he trains Oscar
DeLaHoya for the May 5th fight against Floyd Mayweather. "Oscar
did not want to add fuel to the fire to the already hot father
and son dispute.", explained Richard Schaeffer on the eagerly
anticipated Teleconference. "Floyds 2 million dollar demand was
a clear signal he really didn't want to train Oscar against his
son. We don't need any distractions. We don't need to drive the
father and son apart further."

Roach Negotiating With GBP
To Be Oscar's Trainer vs. Floyd Jr. |
|
While several
trainers, including Shane Mosley's dad, Jack, have been
campaigning for the right to train Oscar De La Hoya,
Freddie Roach , who was at Friday's Anaheim weigh - in
with his fighter Vanes Matirosyan made himself out to be
the front-runner. When asked if he would be the one in
Oscar’s corner on May 5th, said, “It’s in negotiations."
The confident smile on Roaches face left little doubt

I was so touched by this joyous union, I was moved to
send delectably tender young Floyd and fine-aged Oscar some
presents to put under their trees. Silly me. I am given to
excess.

To Oscar I sent the following:
A complete list of all A-list fighters who will
soon be free agents so you and Dickie can get a
jumpstart on everybody else, including the
promoters who have developed their careers.
Naughty boy, that Golden Boy.
To Floyd I sent the following:
A 14-carat gold Duck to commemorate yet another
year in which you managed to make millions
without facing any opponent who might beat you.

For Floyd, Oscar should only be the
beginning |
|
By Marshall Garvey
It has finally come. Now that Mayweather-De La Hoya is cemented
(and although awhile away, it can’t happen soon enough), the
questions not only arise as to who will win and whatnot; there
are also questions about a fighter’s retirement. Although we
should be discussing Oscar’s possible swan song, the subject in
question is Floyd Mayweather. He did, after all, proclaim the
well-rehearsed “one more fight and that’s it for me” bit amid
tears after dismantling Carlos Baldomir earlier this month. With
DLH on the horizon, he unquestionably has a hell of a finale if
he’s dead set on retiring.

To No Ones Surprise
It's Oscar vs.
Floyd May 5, 2007
And As You Saw Here
First Last Week
This is Not Oscar's
Farewell Fight

Poster By Bret "The Threat"
Newton
After all the talk, speculation,
rumor ,smoke blowing etc. the Mayweather team beat the
Golden Boy deadline by a matter of a few hours and
now the fight that had to happen is now a reality. Oscar
vs. Floyd at 154 pounds and although it is not clear if
Oscars WBC belt is up for grabs, we do know the claim
for Pound4Pound best is most certainly at stake.
One thing that comes as no surprise
is that this will not be Oscar's last fight, we told you
that last week and we are confirming it for you today.
