Post-"Contender" Appearance And NABO Lightweight Title

Ahmed “Hollywood”
Kaddour, who recently appeared on “The Contender,” will
become the first contestant from the NBC reality series
to return to boxing when he takes on an opponent to be
announced in the eight-round junior middleweight
co-feature Friday, July 22, 2005, on “ShoBox: The New
Generation.”
In the main event,
California State Junior Welterweight Champion Rolando
Reyes will take on International Boxing Federation (IBF)
No. 14 lightweight contender Courtney Burton for the
vacant North American Boxing Organization (NABO)
lightweight title from Chumash Casino Resort in Santa
Ynez, Calif. Both fighters will make their second
“ShoBox” and Chumash appearances.
SHOWTIME will televise the Gary Shaw
Productions doubleheader at 11 p.m. ET/PT (tape delayed
on west coast). The telecast represents the 64th
in the popular “ShoBox” series, which debuted on
SHOWTIME in July 2001.

Duva, promoter of undefeated heavyweight Samuel “The
Nigerian Nightmare” Peter, is calling on boxing’s
sanctioning bodies to make the winner of Saturday’s
fight between Peter and Taurus “The Bull” Sykes (at
the Events Center in Reno, Nevada and televised live
on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing) the mandatory
number-one contender to their world titles.
“The
winner of this fight,” explains Duva “will hold the
NABF, NABA and USBA heavyweight championships, the
secondary belts for three of the main bodies. If
that’s not grounds for being made number one by all
of them, I don’t know what is.”
Duva
claims he isn’t just clamoring to improve his own
fighter’s position in the rankings (Peter, 23-0
(20), is currently rated #4 WBC, #5 IBF and #5 WBO).
“We’re not taking Taurus Sykes for granted, in fact;
we’re looking for a great fight on Saturday. He’s
only got one loss (Sykes is 23-1) and he’s had some
very impressive victories. Whoever wins this fight
should legitimately be called the number one
contender in the world. Who else deserves it more?”
Duva
says the winner should be properly rewarded for
doing something uncommon for today’s heavyweight
division – fighting. “The one thing the top
heavyweights are not doing is agreeing to fight
anybody. Sykes and Peter should be given the credit
they deserve for putting their records and ratings
on the line to see who is better while the other
guys are all running and hiding, both legally and
publicly. It’s a joke. Everybody is talking, but
nobody is making fights…except for these two guys.”
The
12-round Samuel Peter vs. Taurus Sykes heavyweight
showdown is being promoted by Duva Boxing in
association with Gary Shaw Productions and Tres
Amigos LLC. and will be televised live on SHOWTIME
Championship Boxing on Saturday, July 2, at 9 p.m.

DiBella Entertainment's Ike "Bazooka" Quartey, fresh off
his convincing victory over Verno Phillips in Memphis on
June 11 on HBO, says he is ready to take aim at former
champ Oscar De La Hoya.
"I beat Oscar when I fought him the first time even
though he got the decision," says Quartey, the gunner
from Ghana. "I know I can handle him again. I am ready!"
De La Hoya apparently has Winky Wright, Felix Trinidad
and Fernando Vargas on the radar screen for his return
to the ring.
Said promoter Lou DiBella: "Ike clearly illustrated that
he has plenty left in the tank. He's poised for another
shot at De La Hoya, and can take it to Oscar in what
would be a great fight. Ike is as deserving of a rematch
than Fernando Vargas, and Felix Trinidad has retired.

IBF Light Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton's
trip to America this past weekend was an unqualified
success. The British hero was in Atlantic City to
watch Arturo Gatti put his WBC title on the line
against Floyd Mayweather and also to witness Vivian
Harris' WBA title clash against Carlos Maussa. Other
highlights saw the twenty six year old from
Manchester, England filling the studio guest host
chair on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights program and
Frank Warren's promotional firm Sports Network, in
the form of Frank Maloney and Richard Maynard,
sponsored a closed door interview session with the
top American boxing reporters including Steve
Farhood, Dan Rafael, Tim Smith, Greg Leon and George
Willis , which served well to introduce the
talkative and humorous Hatton to the US Press.

Undisputed Middleweight Champ Bernard “The
Executioner” Hopkins A.K.A.
B-Hop (46-2-1, 32 KOs), will face Undefeated
Middleweight heir apparent
Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor (23-0, 17 KO’s). The
bout will be presented by Golden Boy Promotions in
association with DiBella Entertainment and televised
live on HBO Pay-Per-View (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).
Today, the combatants
held a National teleconference to discuss the highly
anticipated bout.
As I sat waiting in the never ending cue that was
waiting to ask a question of the Champion Hopkins I
noticed that Bernard had a bit of an edge on already
and although he was still as cordial as ever, he
wasn’t putting up with too much from the press and
was quick to correct or reprimand anyone who stepped
out of line. That made it a little easier for me to
swallow when his side of the conference call came to
an end, and I missed an opportunity to speak to
Bernard myself.
On the other hand Jermain was the same Taylor who we
have come to know and he was polite and tolerant
even though some of the questions from the attending
media were pretty bad. Fortunately, I got through to
Jermain on this one, and I was able to drop a couple
of Q’s on him.
All in all, both fighters had some very interesting
and bold statements during the teleconf, and we
thought you might like to hear a bit of what they
had to say!

Hard-hitting, undefeated Jorge "Coloradito" Solis of
Guadalajara, Mexico will defend his Mexican
Featherweight National Title against Nicky Bentz of
Reynosa, Mexico in Top Rank's main event of Telefutura's
"Solo Boxeo de Miller" at the American Bank Center on
Friday, July 1.
"I really looking forward to putting on a good show for
the Corpus Christi fans", said Solis during a media
workout today at the PAL Gym.
Solis (26-0-2, 19 KO's) who is trained by the professor
Jesus "Cholain" Rivero is ranked number 13 by the WBC at
126 pounds.
"This is a big opportunity for me. It will be a chance
to climb the ratings and show my talents to a large
television audience", said Solis.
The Solis-Bentz (36-4-2, 29 KO's) showdown will be a 12
round affair.
"I know Bentz is a very experience fighter and that's
why a prepare well for this fight. I believe that it
will be a very explosive fight between to tough
Mexicans", added Solis.
Bentz, a former two-time world title challenger, is
coming off a controversial split decision loss to
four-time world champion, Johnny Tapia. Bentz lost to
Tapia on January 22,2005 at the new Dodge Arena in the
Rio Grande Valley.

Super Heavy Action On Rijker At Mandalay Bay
|
|
There is heavy wagering action on Lucia Rijker who has
rocketed to a 3-to-1 favorite over Christy Martin in
'Million Dollar Lady' scheduled July 30 at Mandalay Bay.
Rijker initially opened as a 3-to-2 favorite at Mandalay
Bay, but the MGM Mirage sports book is reporting heavy
action on her in the mega showdown with Martin.
Martin said she isn't concerned with the latest odds.
"Rijker is a bully, like the one you see on a schoolyard
playground," said Martin. "Like all bullies, once you
stand up and fight they always back down. I will show
the world and make it all happen on July 30."
Martin has a record of 46-3-2 with 32 knockouts; Rijker
is 17-0 with 14 knockouts. Both are extremely hard
punchers.
Rijker, with chief trainer Freddie Roach, is training at
the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles. Martin is training in
her hometown of Orlando, Fla., but she plans to close
out the final phase of training in Las Vegas in early
July.
The 'Million Dollar Lady' undercard is loaded.
All-action flyweight Jorge Arce, coming off an explosive
performance against Hussein Hussein, will be featured.
'The Hawaiian Punch' Brian Viloria will challenge Eric
Ortiz in a light flyweight championship fight and
undefeated, hard-hitting middleweight Kelly 'The Ghost'
Pavik of Youngstown, Ohio, will be in a 10-round bout.
Also appearing will be USA Olympian Vanes Martroysian of
Glendale, Calif. and big puncher Mike Alvarado of
Denver.
Martin vs. Rijker 'Million Dollar Lady' will be

Well Floyd Mayweather entered the weekend as firm
favourite to win the fight but alienate the fans and
emerges having easily won the fight with a whole new set
of fans! Make no mistake about it as Floyd produced one
of those boxing displays this weekend,
like Roy Jones throwing a party against James Toney or
Bernard Hopkins announcing his arrival versus Tito
Trinidad Floyd Mayweather forcing Gatti to be withdrawn
could be a pivotal fight in boxing history. At best a
star has been born, at worst we are being given a
glimpse of flawed genius, the outcome rests on the
shoulders of Floyd Mayweather. Hopefully for us the fans
this is only the beginning for the Pretty Boy of boxing,
what a beginning it was as he became The Man
material.

Gardner Returns
July 5th in Boston
ESPN2 at The Roxy for Tuesday Night Fights
|

Ian "The Cobra" Gardner
18-2 7ko's will make his return to the ring on July 5th
against battle tested veteran Mahammad Said, 16-3,
10ko's.
The card will be televised on ESPN2 and is promoted by
Cappiello Promotions. Gardner is coming off of a 12
round close unanimous decision loss at the hands of the
unbeaten Armenian star Arthur Abraham.
"I gave that fight away," Gardner said from his training
camp in Brockton,MA. "I wasn't hurt but I got caught off
balance a couple of times and went down. That proved to
be the difference in the scoring"
The 31 year old Said, who is a native of Jordan, now
fights out of Las Vegas, NV.
He has won 12 of his last 14 fights with his two losses
coming at the hands of two-time world title challenger
Raul Frank and 2000 Olympian Jerson Ravelo. Both losses
were tightly contested decisions.
Gardner's most noteworthy wins have come against Tukunbo
Olajide and Kuvanych Toyganbayev.
The co-feature bout has Philadelphia's Rasheem 'The
Untouchable One" Brown 15-2 13ko's fighting against
Chris Troupe, 9-3 5ko's, of Atlanta.
"This is going to be a dynamite card with plenty of
fireworks," remarked the events promoter Richie
Cappiello. "We have local prospects Chris McInerny,
Tyrone Smith, Anthony Russel, Mike Morganelli, and Mark
Clancy also on the card."

“The Magic Man” - Paulie
Malignaggi - plans on returning to the ring in late
August with a repaired right hand and new manager, Sal
LoNano, who guided “Irish” Micky Ward the final four
years of his memorable career.
Malignaggi, 24, has been inactive since December 4, when
he improved his pro record to 19-0 (5 KOs) and captured
the WBC International light welterweight title. But he
broke his right hand in that fight and has undergone
surgery twice.
“I’ve learned how much I love and miss boxing,” the
World Boxing Council No. 9 rated junior welterweight
talked about his recovery period. “I feel like the kid
who’s been left behind. I belong in the mix and I see a
lot of punks getting television time I should have. I’m
coming back stronger than ever and the ones laughing now
will be crying soon.

Three-time world
title contender and the pride of St. Petersburg,
FL, “Diamond” David Santos, has announced that
his fight on the Jeff Lacy – Robin Reid IBF/IBO
super middleweight championship card will be his
last. Lacy, the first member of the 2000 U.S.
Olympic team to win a world title, will make his
professional home debut in a mandatory title
defense against former WBC super middleweight
champion and reigning IBO super middleweight
champion Reid, from Runcorn, England, the IBF’s

Santos, 45-6 (29 KOs), began his professional
career almost 14 years ago, knocking out Cornell
Harris in the first round at Robarts Arena in

carries. A winning percentage exceeding 88% with
over 64% of those wins coming by way of
knockout, Santos has earned NABF and USBA
featherweight and NABF super featherweight and
USBA jr. lightweight titles. Three times Santos

world champions Joel Casamayor, Carlos “El
Famoso” Hernandez and Steve Forbes. Santos is

Now that the weekend is over and everyone
has had a chance to digest Saturday nights proceedings, I have
to ask if anyone has learned anything from that Atlantic City
card, and if you didn’t, feel free to steal my notes and use
them because there will be a pop quiz at the end of the article.
The first
thing that should have been learned from this weekends fights is
this; no matter how much you dislike a fighter, and no matter
how much you despise him because he seems way too arrogant for
his own good, don’t bet against him if he happens to be one of
the most talented fighters in this or any division. Now c’mon,
admit it, we all knew that Mayweathers blinding hand speed was
going to be a difficult task for the aging Gatti to handle, but
because the thought of having to hear Floyd say “I told you so”
was making the skin crawl off our flesh, we picked Gatti to win.
There was the unrealistic hope that somehow, Gatti was going to
be able to neutralize Floyds hand speed and make a war out of
this one, I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that the thought of
Mayweather laying flat on his back didn’t cross my mind on the
weeks leading up to the fight. But true to his word, Floyd
accomplished everything he said he was going to do and more, he
referred to Gatti as a C+ fighter, but he must have been grading
on a curve because after this Saturdays show, I give Arturo a
D-. He did come in and give it his best, and you can’t fail him
for that, but as for everything else, well, give Gatti an E for

Martin Castillo, And Thoughts On His Victory!

The day before his title
defense, we spoke to the WBA Super Flyweight Champ
before he made his defense of his belt. And the day
after his successful defense we spoke with Martin
again, this time we took a moment to ask about his
12 rd. unanimous decision victory.
Boxing2005: You seemed
to win this one pretty easily, did you have any
struggle in this one?
Castillo: I felt very confident
going into the ring, and knew I was going to win.
Ishihara is a tough fighter but I was just too much
for him. Ishihara was in great condition and he is
physically strong and that made this fight very
physical.
Boxing2005: The ref took
a point for a low blow around the sixth round, when
that happened did you think to yourself, "uh oh,
here we go, now I need to get another KO"?
Castillo: No, not at that point.
I thought I was ahead anyway, and I didn’t want to
get off my game plan. So I just simply forgot about
it and went back to that game plan. Although I felt
that Ishihara was the one holding and using elbows
and he was not getting any warnings. But that's part
of the sport sometimes, and you just got to suck it
up and go to work.
Boxing2005: You have a
firm grip on your title now, what do you plan on
doing from here?
Castillo: Well at the moment
just enjoy my vacation, and relax. I will leave it
up to my manager Frank Espinoza and my promoter top
rank to see what’s next for me. Although, somewhere
down the line I would love to unify the titles
someday.

Ray "The Merciless" Mercer from Jacksonville,

With Gatti Through 6 - McGirt Stops The Fight Between
Rounds |

Floyd Mayweather (now 34-0 with 23 KO's)
easily outclassed, out boxed, and out
punched Arturo Gatti in front of his
hometown fans through 6 rounds. After an
actual good start by Gatti in round 1,
the referee, Earl Morton, called "stop
punching" while Floyd had his hand on
the back of Gatti's head while landing
an uppercut. Gatti arose and looked at
the referee and said "come on", because
of the hitting while holding his head
down, |

but also because he called a stop in
punching. Floyd took the opportunity to
come in and land a left hook that
dropped Gatti on the ropes. The referee
rules it a fair knockdown. From rounds 2
until the end of the 6th, Floyd had his
way with Gatti, embarrassing him infront
of his hometown fans in New Jersey.
After going back to his corner wincing
from pain in his left eye, Buddy McGirt
thought it best the fight be stopped. |

Vivian Harris Gets
KNOCKEDOUT!
Vivian
Harris fighting unlike himself from round 1,
came out in Tysonesque fashion and tried to take
Carlos Maussa out with haymakers. Often landing
and it's a mystery how Maussa stayed standing.
However, by taking them, Vivian easily tired
himself out and looked very out of it and like
he didn't want to continue. After round 6,
Vivian went to his corner and refuses to sit. In
round 7 a huge left hand dropped Vivian down for
the count. The referee obviously in there to
help Vivian out, counted to 10 in the time you
could've counted to 30. With the win Maussa
captures the WBA Super Lightweight Title.
Final time, :45 of the 7th round.
The Chavez Jr. Embarrassment Continues
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., now 20-0 with 15 KO's,
continues to fight the weakest opposition and
struggle a bit before finally stopping them.
This weekends "sacrificial lamb", as Jim Lampley
rightly called it, was Ruben Galvan who actually
had more wins than losses, go figure. After an
uneventful 1st round where Jr. just had his way
with Galvan and looked to be almost over, Jr.
actually struggled a bit in the 2nd, and
actually got outworked by this apparently out of
shape opponent. In round 4 the end came a bit
too late as Benji Esteves, referee for the
fight, decided to let Jr. give out a merciful
beating before the corner finally threw in the
towel for him. Galvan went down and through the
ropes after being hurt followed by a push. I
guess these are the only kind of opponents Jr.
can beat, so no complaining about the level of
opposition his opponents are, because if Jr.
actually fought someone worthy, he could get
seriously hurt. Galvan falls to 21-7-2 with 9
KO's.
Calderon Continues To Rack Up Winzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
Ivan Calderon, now
23-0 with 5 KO's (who the heck did he KO?),
continues to snooze the crown and put them to
sleep with his hit and run, hit and run, run,
run, run style with a unanimous decision over
Gerardo Verde. Verde (now 13-2 with 10 KO's) was
outclassed from the opening round, however he
decided to turn it up a notch to little to late
from round 10 to the end. The highlight of the
night was an un-ruled knockdown in round 8 which
was more of a push.
Final scores were 117-111, 115-113 and 117-111.

As the fight crowd slowly
began to filter into the Atlantic City Boardwalk
Hall Convention Center this evening, the Main
Events & Top Rank co-promoted HBO Pay Per View
fight card featuring Arturo Gatti defending his
WBC Super Lightweight Championship against #1
ranked contender "Flamboyant" Floyd Mayweather,
included five non-televised fights.
Here are those results:
The night’s opening bout saw Jr. welterweight
Wes Ferguson improve to 10-1-1 (3 KO’s) with a
four round unanimous decision win over John
Temple; now 6-10-2 with only 1 KO.
Talented, young welterweight prospect Henry
Crawford, fighting out of Paterson, NJ, made
short work of Fernando Jimenez, now 3-6-2 (2
KO’s). Jimenez traveled all the way from
Phoenix, Arizona to take a beating and let
himself get counted out; taking a knee instead
of continuing at 1:34 of the first round.
Crawford improves to 7-0, registering his 2nd
knockout.
In an eight round Jr. middleweight contest,
Giovanni Lorenzo, fighting out of Washington
Heights, NY, took the unanimous decision victory
against tough veteran Ronald Weaver, from New
Orleans. Lorenzo stayed perfect at 18-0 (10
KO’s), while Weaver fell to 29-16-2 (22 KO’s).
Heavyweight contender Calvin Brock needed only
four rounds to make Kenny Craven (now 26-16, 22
KO’s) his 21st knockout victim.
Brock, improving to 26-0, hurt Craven who wisely
to a knee to weather the storm. Brock didn’t
let up, pounding away on his defenseless
opponent, forcing referee Eddie Cotton to force
a halt to the bout at 2:34 of the fourth round.
In a bout just completed Joel Julio, from
Monteria, Columbia annihilated an overmatched
Art Medina (12-15, 5 KO’s) and after a flash
knockdown continued the assault on his badly
hurt foe before finally dropping Medina for good
with a tremendous shot to the body at 2:56 of
the first round. It was Julio’s 17th knockout
win, in eighteen fights, for the undefeated
welterweight sensation.
The televised HBO Pay Per View begins at 9PM
(EST).

Martin Castillo (28-1-16 KO’s) is in
Nagoya Japan and is prepared to put it all on the line
in his rematch against the tough Hideyasu Ishihara
(16-3-1, 11 KO’s). Their first battle was nip and tuck
until Castillo managed to stop Ishihara in the 11th
round. Apparently the site that

and their “Ace” reporter didn’t even know that fight
took place and that interview is a joke! Hey Fire, do a
little research before you start asking questions!
Boxing2005 was happy to chat with Castillo prior to his
upcoming title defense and we think you will find what
we spoke about to be interesting, and well informed!
Boxing2005:Obviously you have no
problem fighting for the Title in Japan since that is
where you earned your interim title in the first place!
Castillo: Well, the last time I fought Ishihara I was
only given a little than less of a month notice. I had
to shed about 21lbs. also at the time I didn’t know that
Ishihara was a southpaw till about 2 weeks before the
fight; so finding sparring partners in less than 2 weeks
was tough. And don’t forget the flight to Japan.

Super bantamweight
hopeful Adam Carrera took a step in the right direction
by stopping journeyman Julio Gamboa at the end of the 7th
round to win the NABF super bantamweight title. Referee
Raul Caiz, Sr. stopped the bout at the request of
Gamboa’s corner between the 7th and 8th
rounds to give Carrera the KO win.
It seemed Carrera would be fighting a handful in Gamboa,
after all Gamboa has faced world class fighters (Daniel
Ponce de Leon and Juan Manuel Marquez, to name a few)
and possesses a hard rugged style, but instead Carrera
proved to be a legitimate prospect who feels is ready to
face anyone in the top ten. “I’m going to continue
training and wait for a challenger hopefully from the
top ten. All in due time but maybe a De Leon or Marquez.
Like all fighters I want to face the best.”

And Gets A Possible September Title Shot |

Oleg Maskaev (now
31-5 with 25 KO's) may have just earned a September date
with WBC Champion Vitali Klitschko with a 3rd round TKO
over last minute replacement and cruiserweight Livin
Castillo. After a slow start in round 1, an awkward and
obvious past his best Maskaev committed to trading with
Castillo in round 2. Maskaev's defense may not all be
there as he took a couple clean shots on the chin that
sent him off balance for a bit, but the size difference
was just too much as a right hand on the chin sent
Castillo down in the 3rd round. Up on shaky legs,
Castillo resumed and Maskaev came in like a monster and
just pounded on Castillo with continuous left hooks,
followed by continuous right hands and Castillo went
down from the punishment that was close to being stopped
by the referee. Castillo again up on very shaky legs was
ready to continue. The referee asked him to take a step
forward and Castillo stumbled slightly and that was
enough for the referee to waive this one off at 1:30 of
the 3rd round. Livin Castillo falls to 10-3 with 7 KO's.
Maskaev said that he thinks he deserves a title shot
with the 9 straight wins as he plans to avenge an
amateur loss at the hands of Vitali Klitschko.

With
unbeaten Jermain Taylor - a rising star with credentials
- taking on Bernard Hopkins - the long-reigning
middleweight champion who is considered by most to still
be in his prime - on July 16 at the MGM Grand in Las
Vegas, it’s interesting to take a look at some of the
other bouts from the modern era (1960 - present) that
mirror this type of matchup.
Let’s start with the Heavyweights:
* In 1964, the young, brash, and undefeated Cassius
Clay, a Gold Medal winner in the 1960 Rome Olympics at
178 lbs., takes on the fearsome Charles “Sonny” Liston,
who was coming off two straight first round knockout
wins over Floyd Patterson.
Result: A monster upset, as Clay makes Liston retire on
his stool after six rounds.
* In 1971, it was “Smokin” Joe Frazier vs Muhammad Ali,
the former Cassius Clay. Though Ali may not be all the
way back from his forced three-year exile, both men are
unbeaten – a first in a heavyweight world title fight.
Each claim to be the real heavyweight champion and both
combatants have captured Olympic Gold (Frazier in 1964
at HW).

Oleg Maskaev will now
be up against Livin Castillo, a 10-2 with 7 KO's last
minute replacement after Dale Crowe had to pull out of
ESPN2'S Friday Night Fights Telecast tonight. Castillo's
2 losses are a 3rd round KO at the hands of Jean
Marc Mormeck in 200, and a 4th round KO at the hands of
Jorge Castro back in 2003.

"Flamboyant" Floyd
Mayweather, 33-0 with 22 knockouts, is the most
gifted and talented boxer of this generation.
Arturo "Thunder" Gatti (39-6, 30 KO’s), is
pound-for-pound boxing’s most exciting fighter and
has much more boxing ability than he is given credit
for.
Gatti has not faced
anyone close to the level of Mayweather (lone
exception: Arturo’s TKO loss to Oscar De La Hoya in
2001; at 147 pounds), while the flamboyant one has
been in with - and soundly defeated - great
champions: Genaro Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Diego
Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo (twice) and DeMarcus
Corley.

Who could blame Jesse James Leija for being
happy today? His Spurs just won the NBA Championship
and he just returned home from a vacation in Cancun
Mexico. The life of a retired Champ is one most of
us would love to taste, just for a brief moment at
least!
But for James, as with most
boxers, life outside the ring is filled with
thoughts of wanting to climb in one more time. Check
out this quick interview we had with James while he
was in Mexico.
Boxing2005:So James,
your in Cancun, it must be a great way to live up
your retirement?
James: You know what? Honestly,
I can understand now, why fighters always end up
making a comeback! I have had those feelings and
it's tough not to want to go back to the gym. I have
really had to force myself not to even go back just
to work out because I know what would happen! But
with this rib injury I have I know that I need to
stay away.

Thunder and
Lightning have co-existed since the beginning of time,
this Saturday night, June 25, 2005 on HBO PPV, they will
come to a parting of the ways. "Thunder comes in the
name of Arturo Gatti, while Floyd Mayweather Jr. wears
the tunic of "Lightning."
They will be
fighting for Arturo’s WBC Super Lightweight title. Floyd
(33-0 W/ 22 KO’s) is nearly a 4-1 odds on betting
favorite mainly due to his speed and elusiveness. To
hear "Pretty Boy" talk, the fight is a mere formality.
His unkind words have been directed at Arturo, (39-6 W/
30 KO’s) one of the most loved fighters in the history
of the sport of boxing. At a recent press conference,
these are just a few unkind things Floyd had to say
about Arturo: "He’s a club fighter that they put on
HBO," "He’s never been in with a guy like me, his last
six opponents I could beat in one night, he’s going to
get outboxed easy and then I am going to stop him. He
don’t really believe he’s going to win, he’s scared.
He’s not a good fighter."

Tszyu Given Clear Bill Of Health

Kostya Tszyu’s chief
medico, Dr Bill Anseline, refuted claims that his
patient had suffered bruising on the brain, as
suggested in an exclusive story appearing in the
Daily Telegraph today.
“Categorically there was no bruising in or on
Kostya’s brain and it would be misleading for anyone
to say so,” said Dr Anseline. “Kostya underwent a
series of routine scans and tests last week purely
as a precautionary measure. These tests included
attention to the head and stomach regions. Kostya
was bruised in several areas as a result of the
fight, and while he had some discomfort last week,
there is no mid or long term effect at all”.
Tszyu’s manager, Matthew Watt, was also dismissive
of the bold headlines that have sparked considerable
concern about the health and well-being of
Australia’s most celebrated boxer.
“Kostya Tszyu and Ricky Hatton fought a war for 11
rounds,” said Watt. “Both fighters wore a colourful
reminder of the nature of that contest after the
fight. Thankfully, official medical reports have
confirmed that Kostya did not sustain any serious
injuries as a result of the gruelling encounter and
the suggestion that my client suffered brain
bruising is not correct.
“Kostya is supported by a very professional and
experienced team and his health and well-being is
our priority,” continued Watt. “Most importantly,
Kostya’s doctor has confirmed that Kostya is
healthy.”
At 35, Tszyu will now be forced to consider his
future. On this matter, Watt commented:
“Kostya will take as much time as he needs to make a
decision on his future. This will be a decision that
will involve his family and team, but at the end of
the day should rightly be made by Kostya himself.
There is no pressure being placed on Kostya in
regards to his decision. We would kindly ask that he
be given time to privately consider his future. Once
he has done that, we will advise Kostya’s fans and
the media of the outcome,” finished Watt.

unification showdown against World Boxing Organization (WBO)
168-pound titleholder Joe Calzaghe all but set for later
this year, International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super
Middleweight Champion Jeff Lacy will first have to
defend his crown against former world champion and
current International Boxing Organization (IBO) super
middleweight kingpin, Robin Reid, on SHOWTIME
CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at 9 p.m.
ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). Lacy, who has
battled opponents in nine different states, as well as
England and Wales, will fight in front of his hometown
fans for the first time as a pro when he makes his third
and toughest title defense to date against Reid at the
St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. Gary Shaw
Productions, LLC, will promote the world championship
bout.
