Samuel Peter reaches out

Nigerian heavyweight Samuel
Peter would like to extend an invitation to recently
retired Mike Tyson to accompany him on a humanitarian
mission to Africa.
"It would be an honor for me to bring one of the
greatest champions in history to Africa where I know we
could raise people's awareness of the many problems of
the area."
Peter, who says he has always had tremendous respect for
"Iron" Mike, was impressed to hear the former champion
reveal his goal of doing missionary work in his
post-boxing life. "Mike Tyson is like a God to people in
my country and all over the continent. For him to go
there and meet the people would be a dream for
everyone."
"People all over the world still love Mike Tyson," added
Peter's promoter, Dino Duva. "For the hardest-punching
heavyweight of the past 20 years to accompany boxing's
new knockout king to a region so desperately in need of
assistance would be a tremendous help. Just having them
there would lift a lot of spirits and bring much-needed
attention to a continent that has been devastated by
war, famine, and aids."
Duva says that Peter is serious about the idea and is
hoping Tyson will agree. "Sam has always been a huge fan
of Mike's and when he announced he was retiring to do
humanitarian work, Sam called me right away to see what
I thought of the trip. I think it's a great idea and I
think they could do a lot of good. We're hoping Mike
will call us and make it happen. This is not about
fighting in the ring; its about fighting together for
good things outside the ring."

It’s just days away –
the 12 round IBF Light Heavyweight Elimination bout
between Ricky “Showtime” Quiles and Javier Jauregui live
at the Coconut Creek Casino in Coconut Creek, Florida.
Ricky “Showtime” Quiles (37-6-3, 8 KOs), a slick boxing
southpaw out of Loraine, Ohio, is coming off the biggest
victory of his almost 16-year career, an exciting 12
round decision win over highly regarded Edner Cherry on
February 4. It was a satisfying win for the native of
Ponce, Puerto Rico, a former NABO, WBF, NABA, and WBC
Continental Americas Champion, who is riding an
impressive four fight winning streak.
Quiles will battle former IBF World Lightweight
Champion, Javier Jauregui (49-11-2, 34 KOs) who has
taken the road less traveled during his 17-year career.
Also featuring, rising star Edison Miranda (22-0, 21
KOs) from Barranquilla, Colombia. Miranda is coming off
his US debut on May 20, when he impressively beat rugged
Sam Reese over ten rounds. Blessed with concussive power
and a pleasing style, boxing insiders believe the
24-year-old is destined for great things in the
Middleweight Division.
Heavyweight contender Kendrick Releford will also be
available for questions. Releford (13-4-1, KO’s) has
been a late bloomer in the sport, rebounding from an
8-3-1 early pro record to win his last five bouts,
including victories over Elieser Castillo, Ron Guerrero,
and Ramon Garbey. The WBO Latino and IBF United States
Atlantic Coast Regional champion, the 23-year-old Texan
is on the fast track to the top ten within the coming
year.

Oakey Challenges Haymer for English Belt |

After two false starts Portsmouth,
England's Tony Oakey looks to be finally
getting back in the ring where he can
launch an all out assault on the English
Light Heavyweight title currently held
by London's Peter "The Daddy" Haymer.
The two clash on the undercard of
"Lightweight Bragging Rights", headlined
by the much awaited double title bout
between British champion Graham Earl and
Commonwealth beltholder Kevin Bennett to
take place this Sunday at York Hall in
London's East End. The show is being put
on by Maloney Promotions in association
with HIFX and BBE and will be televised
by Setanta Sports in the UK and Ireland
starting at 7:45pm and also worldwide on
the web.
Oakey and Haymer were all set to go late
last month at the Mountbatten Centre in
Portsmouth but the hometown hero
contracted a case of food poisoning and
the whole bill had to be scrapped at the
last minute. In April, a contest between
Oakey, 19-1 (5), and journeyman Paul
Bonson at the same venue was cancelled
when the South Coast ticket seller
suffered a training injury. This time
however the former WBU and Commonwealth
titlist has stayed away from Chinese
take-away and is sparing the heavy bag
from his best shots, saving them for
Haymer instead.
That would be a good idea as "The Daddy"
is riding a three year, nine fight win
streak and will certainly have fistfuls
of confidence going into this weekend's
match-up. Haymer, 14-2-1 (3), who
stunned the favored Steve Spartacus in
London last November to take the English
belt, will be trying also to sting
Oakey's manager Frank Maloney, who
previously managed the London man but
chose not to resign him to contract.
Will Tony Oakey regain the form that saw
him achieve amateur glory and the
Commonwealth and WBU titles along the
road to eighteen straight professional
wins? Or will Haymer strip bare the
short, stocky Portsmouth battler and
send his career into a tailspin such as
the one Oakey suffered following his
defeat to Matthew Barney a year and a
half ago?
That question can obviously only be
answered in the ring, but both men have
looked very sharp in sparring and if
that form holds true, coupled with the
dueling motivations each man brings to
the ring, they just may overshadow the
Earl - Bennett domestic superfight that
tops the bill of "Lightweight Bragging
Rights."
Also on the card, undefeated Gary
Woolcombe faces the rugged Welshman Taz
Jones for the British Masters Light
Middle belt and Nathan Ward and James
Paisley argue for the British Masters
Welter crown. Added attractions are
bouts featuring Amir Khan's nemesis, the
Manchester lightweight Craig Watson and

SHOWTIME will replay
Saturday’s historical pay-per-view bout that saw
Mike Tyson slide into possible retirement
following a stunning turn of events in which the
former two-time world heavyweight champion
refused to answer the bell for the seventh round
against Kevin McBride. Fight fans have the
opportunity to witness perhaps the final chapter
of boxing’s most fascinating character when
SHOWTIME rebroadcasts the fight that took place
at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., on
Saturday, June 18, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Hoping
to revitalize his career, Tyson (50-6, 2 NC, 44
KOs) threw everything he could at his largest
opponent to date (McBride weighed in at 271
pounds), including an intentional head butt in
the sixth round that cost him two points. Tyson
had an excellent fourth round, storming from the
corner and opening up with a powerful right and
body shots, followed by a left hook and another
body shot. However, McBride managed to weather
the storm.
Previously, Danny Williams stopped Tyson at 2:51
in the fourth round on July 30, 2004. Once the
“baddest man on the planet,” Tyson became the
youngest heavyweight champion when he registered
a second-round TKO over Trevor Berbick on Nov.
22, 1986. Tyson sat atop the heavyweight
division the next few years, uniting the
heavyweight titles while making nine successful
defenses. He has now lost three out of his last
four fights.
McBride (33-4-1, 28 KOs), of Clones, Ireland,
absorbed Tyson’s best shots and imposed his will
on Tyson in winning his eighth consecutive
fight. After a Tyson head butt in the sixth
round, McBride shoved his opponent into the
ropes as the bell sounded. Prior to defeating
Tyson, McBride tallied a fifth-round TKO over
Kevin Montiy on March 18, 2005, in Mashantucket,
Conn.
SHOWTIME Pay Per View’s Steve Albert and Al
Bernstein called the action from ringside with
Jim Gray serving as roving reporter. The
executive producer of the SHOWTIME PAY PER VIEW

world-class featherweight Steven Luevano, 27-0, of
LaPuente, Calif. has worked for weeks with his new
trainer Don House at the 'House of Champions' gym in Las
Vegas to get wired in for an important title fight this
Friday night at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix.
House is the trainer of Kid Diamond -- who smoked hard
punches and battled bravely vs. former world champion
Joel Casamayor in a 12-round draw in New York this past
weekend -- of Las Vegas and Zahir Raheem of
Philadelphia.
"Steven has worked hard in sparring against Diamond and
Raheem to get prepared for Friday night," House said.
Luevano will take on Genaro Trazancos, 21-6, of Mexico
City, in a 12-round NABA featherweight championship.
This is an important fight for Luevano who is rated WBO
#3, WBC #8, WBA #9, IBF #10.
In the opening bout, which will televised by Telefutura,
Top Rank welterweight prospect Franscisco Rincon of
Dallas will be in an eight-round bout.
There will be a Top Rank press conference this coming
Wednesday in Phoenix. The top fighters will be at
Phoenix Ranch Market, 5833 S. Central Ave. at 2 pm.

Navigators, CT. Gov. Rally To Save Sub Base |
|
Baseball professionals and political leaders are joining
forces in Connecticut, as The Norwich Navigators
Double-A baseball team hosts a "Save Our U.S. Sub Base"
rally on Tuesday, June 14 prior to its 6:35 p.m. home
game. The statewide effort has drawn the attention of
Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell, who has committed to
appearing at the event, and other local and national
political leaders who are fighting to keep the Groton
Submarine Base open. The Connecticut Sub Base is one of
numerous national military operations targeted for
closure by the U.S. Government later this year.
"As a business in Southeast Connecticut this issue
clearly supersedes regional boundaries," said Lou
DiBella, president and managing partner of the
Navigators. "Groton will be one of the highest impacted
base closures across the nation. Our rally is an
opportunity to unite the community and join with the
"Save Our Sub Base Committee" to raise our voice on a
critical issue of national importance."
Dodd Stadium Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and fans will
be admitted to both the rally and Navigators game for
FREE. The pre-game rally begins at 6:00 p.m. The team
is also encouraging all game attendees to wear red and
create signs that express support for the Groton
Submarine Base. Eastern Connecticut's very own Rock
Band, Superbald, will be playing their hit song
"Submarine Town" live prior to the start of the game.
According to local media sources, economists predict
closure of the Groton base would devastate the state
economy and threaten 31,000 jobs statewide, more than
8,000 of them at the base itself. The Groton facility
was built in 1872 as the Navy's first submarine base and
is home to the Naval Submarine School and 18 attack
submarines. Its effect on the regional economy is
estimated at $2.5 billion. A final decision to actually
close the base occurs in September.
The Navigators are the Double-A Affiliate of the San
Francisco Giants, celebrating their 11th season in
Connecticut. Tickets for all home games are now

undefeated WBC/IBF #1 ranked featherweight contender
Rocky Juarez vies for his first world title when he
challenges WBC featherweight champion In Jin Chi in
a potential “Fight of the Year” candidate.

Duva: Don't Count out

Promoter Dino Duva of Duva
Boxing says that not only was he very impressed with
heavyweight Kirk Johnson's performance, last Friday
against Yanqui Diaz, but also with his attitude.
"I think Kirk looked really good for someone who has
been off for a year," said Duva of Johnson's fifth-round
technical decision over Diaz (scores of 49-42, 49-42 and
49-43) at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula,
California.
An unintentional head butt forced the fight to end
prematurely, but not before Johnson had Diaz down once
in round two and twice in round five. "Kirk has always
had as much natural talent as anybody out there. What
impressed me most was his attitude and the way after the
fight he said he wanted to get right back in the gym,"
explained Duva. "The way the heavyweight division is
these days, if he keeps busy, he should be able to get
back in the title picture fairly quickly."
The career resurrection of Johnson, now 36-2-1 (26),
comes as more good news for the Duva Boxing stable in
what is already turning out to be a fantastic year. With
several prospects on the verge of world title fights,
none more prominent than new heavyweight force Samuel
"The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter, the return of Johnson
will give Duva Boxing a 1-2 punch at the top of the
division.
"I still believe in Kirk's potential. With him, it was
never a question of the physical; Kirk's problems were
always mental. I think he has the right attitude now.
He's focused and ready to get back in the picture."
Duva says that if Johnson has truly sorted out his
difficulties, there is still a tremendous up-side to the
big Nova Scotian. "Kirk's only got one real loss and he
didn't give himself a chance to win the Klitschko
fight," he explained. "He's not that old (32) and he
doesn't have that much wear because he hasn't been in a
lot of wars."
The next step, says Duva, is to put Johnson in a fight
that will catch the eye of the world organizations. "I
think we're going to get him back in the ring in August
or September against someone a notch up from Diaz. Maybe
we'll put him in with a contender to start him back on
his way up the rankings. I still have big plans for him
if he can keep that positive outlook."

On the night when boxing’s
once-most potentially gifted and feared fighter,
Mike Tyson, hopefully fought the last fight (sixth
round loss to Kevin McBride) of his much maligned
and tumultuous career; the rapidly rising career of
Miguel Cotto, one of boxing’s newest and brightest
stars, appears boundless and destined for great
things.
Cotto, Puerto Rico’s perennial
amateur champion (1997-2000), scored the biggest
victory of his young professional career in front of
a frenzied, predominately-Cotto, Madison Square
Garden crowd.
Defending his World Boxing Organization jr.
welterweight title against the rugged and very
difficult Muhammad Abdullaev, Cotto was facing the
same fighter that shattered his Olympic dream at the
2000 Sydney games.

Angeles, Bob Arum suggested to the media that if we
were tired of hearing the constant droning on of the
broadcasters during the fights that we should make
our voice be heard. In fact Arum went so far as to
suggest that we should write to the cable companies
and tell them to have the broadcasters shut up!
Point well taken Bob! With that in mind.......

Never have I seen or heard a
group of broadcasters pander to "The Man" like this.
That was the most deplorable show to listen to this
year, topping the broadcast that heard the crew
chatting and yucking it up with Mayweather during
his fight with Brusseles.

Sam Defeats Okhello For
WBC International Heavy Title

Kempten/Germany – It was “only” under
card but the bout between Turkish Sinan Samil Sam (WBC
#3) and African Peter Okhello for the WBC International
Heavyweight Title was the attraction of the night. The
Turkish title holder defeated his belt by unanimous
decision.
30 year old Sam dominated the fight right
from the beginning. Good jabs and hard right hands to
body and head of Okhello. The Uganda-guy started way to
slow, didn’t keep the distance and needed time to
adjust.
Peter Okhello, living since eight years
in Japan, came for the first time to fight in Europe
because he didn’t have had any real opponents in Asia.
The KO-guy (16 KO’s in 17 fights) came with high
expectations – and had to realize that it needs more to
survive in the real world of boxing. Says Okhello: “I
was really good. After round eleven my coach told me
‘You have him’. I just needed one more round and would
have won in the thirteen’s.”

Miguel Cotto takes a big step
forward in his quest to become the best 140
pounder in boxing as he showcased all of his
skills and talent as he thoroughly dismantled a
tough and rugged
Mohammed Abdulaev, stopping the fighter
at 57 seconds into round 9.
From the onset Abdulaev made it perfectly clear
that it would be his mission to come forward in
a never say die attitude and press Cotto, a
fighter he beat in the |

Olym pics, and it was apparent he
had no other game plan in place. Early in the
bout Mohammed landed some nice right hands that
hurt Miguel, but it would not be enough.
For Cotto, it was time to avenge the loss to his foe,
and with a display of great defense, pinpoint punches,
power and stamina. Miguel moved up the ladder in the Jr.
Welter division, and an argument can be made that he is
the Cream Of The Crop in that weight class, which makes
his comments about a fight with De La Hoya at a 147
catch weight all the more surprising, and interesting.

With shades of the Pacquiao/Marquez bout,
Casamayor and Kid Diamond took to the ring with the
intention of becoming the top ranked WBA lightweight,
but when the scores were read, the quest for the best
had not been settled.
The fight started out with Casamayor busting open and
dropping the Kid, but was followed by great action that
brought a fighter on the brink of destruction back into
the fight that was too close to call for the judges.
Final scores read 116-111 for Diamond, 115-112 for
Casamayor & 114-114.

McBride Makes
Tyson Quit (& Cheat)
To Win 6th Round TKO |

Mike Tyson's days
in the ring should be OVER! McBride took Tyson's
best shots through 6 rounds and Tyson went back
to his corner to tell trainer Jeff Fenech he did
not want to fight! Tyson, giving his best in
rounds 1-4, however, Mcbride would tie up Tyson
and take his best shots. In round 5 McBride hurt
Tyson and unleashed a few uppercuts with Tyson
on the ropes. In round 6 Tyson came out with his
dirty tactics and tried to break McBrides arm as
we saw in the Fans Botha fight. Then Tyson gave
an INTENTIONAL headbutt that opened up an
immediate cut over McBrides Left eye. Tyson was
deducted 2 pts and the end seemed close as Tyson
did not know what to do. After a clean |
punch by McBride,
Tyson fell to the canvas following a small push, but was
obviously hurt as the bell sounded and Tyson stayed on
the canvas. Finally getting up after struggling, Tyson
went to his corner and told Fenech he was done.
Tyson says he's done fighting and does not what to
disrespect the sport anymore.
Ali Stings Toughill! Stops Her In 3!
Laila Ali improves to 21-0 with 18 KO's after
looking impressive against Erin Toughill. In round 1,
Ali swarmed over Toughill, staggering her with a 1, 2
combo. In round 2, Ali was just too fast and landed some
nice combinations. In round 3, the tides turned a bit as
Toughill began landing some nice body shots, but at the
end of the round Ali took over and pounded on Toughill
who was defenseless against the ropes and the referee
had no choice to stop it at 1:59 of the 3rd. Toughill
falls to 6-2-1.
Mitchell Gets Headbutted & Wins NABF Title With 1st
Fight at 147
Sharmba Mitchell (now 56-4 with 31 KO's) testing the
waters at 147 did rather well vs. Chris Smith through
the first 4 rounds. A quicker Mitchell got off to a fast
start as Smith had planned to take the fight into deeper
water. The fight ended at :16 of the 5th round when an
unintentional headbutt caused two immediate cuts on
Mitchell's face, one on the left eyelid and one bigger
gash just above the left cheek that started bleeding
profusely as he went to the corner and winced in obvious
pain. The ringside physician stopped the fight.
Smith, who drops to 19-2-1 with 12 KO's, was obviously
disappointed saying "I'm a distance fighter, not a 4 or
5 rounds fighter. He should he continued."

Miguel Cotto: "I’m not Tito!"
Puerto Rican mega-talent on verge of becoming
boxing’s next superstar.

Monday’s by-invitation-only media roundtable luncheon
brought out several of the top boxing writers from the
New York area; to one of the city’s finest and most
respected establishments - the NY Friars Club - for
basically one reason…..Miquel Cotto.
Cotto (23-0 with 19 KO’s) will be making his Madison
Square Garden debut on tonight, in front of an estimated
crowd in excess of 15,000; and the bigness of the event
has not eluded boxing’s fastest rising star.
"Growing up in Puerto Rico I never thought I would ever
fight at Madison Square Garden and it‘s very motivating
to me," stated the humbled fighter. "I went to the gym
when I was eleven years old to lose weight, that’s when
I started boxing!"
Another motivating factor for the 24 year old Cotto,
while not publicly admitting so, is his opponent for
this, his third, World Boxing Organization (WBO) Jr.
Welterweight title defense; the dangerous and not
unfamiliar Mohammad Abdullaev.
Abdullaev crushed the perennial Puerto Rican National
amateur champion’s (1997-2000) Olympic dream in their
opening round bout at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney;
a bout which Abdullaev won handily, 17-7, en route to
his earning a gold medal at 139 pounds.
"I was very frustrated after my Olympic loss, but I put
it behind me and trained very hard to get where I am
now. It’s a closed chapter in our careers." stressed
the likeable Cotto.
Abdullaev (15-1, 12 KO’s) hasn’t enjoyed the meteoric
rise in his professional career as had Cotto, but sees
this fight against his extremely popular arch-rival as
his opportunity to reach the next level, "At this time
he (Cotto) is the best, but I’m doing all I can to
change that and to win this fight!"
The timing couldn’t be better for "Team Cotto" as the
140 pound division is at it’s peak in popularity and
more importantly, it’s profitability; due to the
exorbitant amount of truly talented and exciting boxers
currently fighting at the jr. welterweight level: Floyd
Mayweather, Arturo Gatti, Ricky Hatton, Vivian Harris
and Kostya Tszyu, as well as the undisputed welterweight
world champion Zab Judah entertaining the notion of
dropping down, could make this weight class the richest
in all of boxing today!
"Their isn’t a clear # 1 at 140lbs., we all have the
chance to be the best," acknowledged Cotto, "The best
fighters in our division are fighting now. Everyone
thought Tszyu was # 1, he isn’t anymore - we will see
who is the best."
As if Cotto’s popularity and appeal couldn’t get any
higher, his promoter, the legendary Bob Arum of Top
Rank, feels that his fighter will keep improving; as a
boxer and as a major ticket seller.
"Cotto is not a complete fighter yet, he is still a work
in progress," noted Arum who is excited about Cotto’s
future, "he is a kid dedicated to getting better and
better, and he will stay at this weight (140lbs.) for
the foreseeable future."
Addressing the media Arum also touched on the
intangibles not usually thought about by most fighters -
but, Miquel Cotto is not like most fighters - "there are
many factors outside of boxing which determine a
fighter’s status as a box office star, and Cotto has
what it takes to be a superstar."
"Cotto is an appealing fighter; much more appealing than
Trinidad," observed Arum, "He can be much bigger than
Tito Trinidad!"
This weekend will be a giant piece in the "Miguel Cotto
Boxing Superstar" puzzle; not only can he avenge his
Olympic defeat at the hands of Mohammad Abdullaev this
Saturday in front of a near capacity Madison Square
Garden crowd filled with his ravenous and appreciative
Puerto Rican boxing fans, but Cotto is also playing host
as the Honorary Grand Marshall for New York’s Puerto
Rican Day parade the following afternoon.
Another of those intangibles that Bob Arum was alluding
to; eloquently said by Cotto himself, "when I’m not
fighting, I’m with my family; my wife and three
children. I sacrifice a lot being away training for my
fights, so I want to be with them and stay together."
In the night’s co-feature, former world champion Joel
Casamayor (31-3, 19 KO’s) will take on the undefeated
Almazbek "Kid Diamond" Raiymkulov (20-0 with 12 KO’s) in
a lightweight title elimination bout.
HBO will begin it’s HBO After Dark broadcast at 10pm ET.

O'clock news, KNTV channel 2's Fred Inglis, talks boxing
with the Bay Area's undefeated NABF Featherweight
Champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (15-0-1). Inglis
gets up close and personal with the young phenom who is
coming off an impressive title defense on SHOWTIME.
"The Ghost" ranked # 4 in the world by the WBC, was just
voted NABF "Champion of the year." Do to the nature of
the business, the segment most likely will be aired on
Sunday, but Saturday is still an option.

Lacy was the clear victor, selling the
majority of tickets, worth several thousands of
dollars to the fifty-plus buyers who braved the
heavy rain to trek down and buy the tickets
directly from their favorite personality.
"Paco took it like a man," gloated the
victorious Lacy. "I hope he takes it equally as
well when he enters the ring as my sparring
partner!"
The stakes were high on this wager. Paco is now
entitled to a world championship trip straight
to knuckle junction...a sparring session Lacy!"
Calls to Paco's health insurance plan have not

in the day with Buddy then I go running and then
swimming. I feel very relaxed and strong. On June 25th
it is great fighting infront of my home crowd. Not too
much worries...My plans are to go in there and fight him
and my goal is to hurt him and hurt him bad. I want to
make a fight, that is what I plan to do. I'm not
intrested in what he says or what he does I will just
stick to my plans. I will keep my WBC Super lightweight
championship.

Shelly Finkel, are feeling pretty confident right
about now.
They finally were able to get the fight they have
wanted all along; against the 6’6", 260 lb. Kevin
"Clones Colossus" McBride, from Brockton, Mass., via
Clones, Ireland, which is now set; this Saturday
night at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C.
After forgoing McBride close to a year ago for the
supposedly cheaper, yet just as non-threatening type
of opponent; in the name of Danny Williams, Finkel
has learned an expensive lesson (Williams knocked
out Tyson in round four of their 07/30/04 fight), or
has he?

Harrison TKO'd Robert Davis at 2:21 of round 7 in their
fight in Temecula. Quite frankly, Audley looked slow
during the bout and in his posy fight comments he said
that he hurt his ankle recently and has not sparred in
over a week!
Regardless of the supposed injury, Harrison did what he
had to by dropping Davis once in round one and then
finishing the job in round 7.
And in an effort to retain The 2004 Golden Turkey Award,
Yanqui Diaz lost in hideous fashion to Kirk Johnson by a
fifth round technical decision. Diaz did everything he
could to retain his dubious honor by kissing the canvas
3 times in the 5 round snoozer.
He went down 1 time in round 2 and doubled our pleasure
in round 5 by swan diving twice in the fifth.
Johnson looked to be taking a shot at Yanquis Turkey by
having points for low blows deducted twice in the
tubfest!
Is it mandatory for Diaz to be involved in train wrecks
every time he fights? Apparently so, as this one was
stopped in five due to unintentional headbutts. Thank
goodness!

It will be the veteran warrior against the young turk
fighting in his home town when Team Freedom Promotions,
Inc. presents "Battle For Pride," a super
welterweight showdown featuring Mexican great Yory Boy
Campas, the former world champion, against Matt Vanda,
the local hero, live on Pay-Per-View on Friday night,
June 24, from the Target Center in Minneapolis.
The PPV featuring four hotly contested fights is priced
at $19.95, and is available by contacting your local
cable provider.
The evening will also feature a tribute to the career of
the legendary Roberto Duran, who celebrates the 25th
Anniversary of his memorable victory over Sugar Ray
Leonard this year. Duran scored his tremendous triumph
over Leonard on June 20, 1980 in Montreal, Quebec,
Canada, almost 25 years to the date of the coming silver
anniversary celebration in Minneapolis.
Vanda, who has appeared on national television on both
ESPN and Showtime, is the pride of St. Paul, MN, and has
put forth a stellar 33-1 ring record with 21 wins coming
by way of knockout. The 26-year-old will be facing his
stiffest test in Campas, the standout from Colonia
Moderna, Mexico, who has compiled an incredible 86
victories during a remarkable career, suffering only
seven setbacks, and scoring 70 knockout victories.
Campas now fights out of Phoenix, AZ. Campas defeated
Raul Marquez to capture the IBF Light Middleweight crown
in Atlantic City on December 6, 1997, a title he
ultimately lost to Oscar De La Hoya. Campas began his
career at the age of 15 as a young phenom in his native
Mexico in 1987.
"If Matt wins this fight, it puts him in a position to
take on the likes of De La Hoya, Vargas, Quartey,
Mosley, as well as all of the 154-pound champions," said
Leon Margules, president of Team Freedom promotions.
"Should Campas score, he would again become a player in
the division."

This past weekend saw one of the biggest boxing
events to be staged in Britain since such high
profile occasions such as the Lewis -Bruno, Lewis -
Ruddock, Benn - McClellan or McGuigan - Pedroza
fights. The Hatton - Tszyu card had been the fastest
selling fight on record in Britain, with all 22,000
tickets going in just 2 hours. Last week I'd visited
both the Hatton gymnasium and Tszyu's camp at the
Arena in Bolton. The different approach of how these
fighters prepare for fights and relate to the media
was similar to the contrast of doing your shopping
in the corner shop or driving to London's West End
and browsing at Harrods.

Welcome Back Audley, Now Can You Please
Inject Some Class Into the Heavyweight Division? |

So what kept you so long Audley? I’ve had to wait just
under a year to see you box again after you made so much
progress in 2004. Now I cannot even see you live anymore
as the combined efforts of Frank Warren, the British
Press and the BBC has seen you forced out of your native
land in search of respect, you will get respect in the
States as long as you fight regularly and stay unbeaten.
What separates Audley from other heavies is the sheer
talent he possesses in comparison to the rest of the
division, the two most talented fighters at the top of
the rankings consist of James Toney (as former
middleweight) and Chris Byrd (who should be a
middleweight), Vitlai you say? Gimme a break, the guy
looked pedestrian versus Danny Williams who was a
(extremely) heavy - bag on the night, Vitali is like a
decent computer program, he does what he is told to do
but as for spontaneous skill? Forget about it, this guy
looks at his hands in disbelief when he lands, all too
rarely, with decent shots. Audley is old in terms of age
but is a baby in terms of wear and tear, he can punch in
combinations, has fast hands, his footwork is tidy but
most importantly he can knock a guy out and then sit
down to speak coherently about it. Audley is a big guy
that can box and talk brilliantly, boy do we love those
guys; he is made for the USA so his exile could give his
career the kick up the arse it so desperately needs.

Miguel Cotto vs. Mohammed Abdullaev
Fighting the main event at Madison Square Garden
over the Puerto Rican Day parade weekend - this
is Miquel Cotto's stage to shine and prove that
he is ready to be become boxing's next
"superstar".
The young, former Puerto Rican National amateur
champion will show he is worthy of all the
acclaim by beating Abdullaev; avenging his 2000
Olypmic loss to the tough and capable Uzbekistan
fighter, who eventually took home the gold
medal.
Abdullaev, a solid fighter in his own
right, hasn't progressed professionally at the
meteoric pace of his arch-rival and will do all
he can to keep the fight competitive before
Cotto lowers the boom around the 7th or 8th
round to the delight of the predominately Puerto
Rican fight crowd - rooting on their new hero!

Everyone knows how this one is supposed to end,
and if Tyson doesn't beat McBride I don't know
what "Team Tyson" can do next.
Mountain Rivera (played by Anthony Quinn many
years ago in the classic boxing movie: "Requiem
for a Heavyweight") is obviously no longer
available, so it's now or never for Mr. Tyson.
Showing how much his once-potentionally
unlimited skills have eroded it will still take
Tyson four or five rounds before he dispatches
of the super-sized, yet super-slow, really nice
Irish fella.

LUCIA RIJKER blasted
Laila Ali
today for avoiding a million dollar battle
between them. Rijker, 17-0 (14 KOs), is
training for her July 30 pay-per-view mega-bout
at Mandalay Bay against the legendary
CHRISTY MARTIN,
46-3-2 (32 KOs), in
"Million Dollar
Lady" the richest event in women's
boxing history, with the winner receiving a cool
$1 million.
Ali, who refused to fight Rijker, despite the
$250,000 guarantee to the loser, chose to fight
Erin Toughill,
6-1-1, on the undercard of this
weekend's Mike Tyson-Kevin McBride event.
"Good luck to her... she can run but she can't
hide," said Rijker. "She should honor her
father's name.

appreciates the significance of headlining in the

“It’s great,” Greenberg remarked about fighting in Las
Vegas. “I’ve fought here once before, but this time it’s
in the main event, and I can’t wait. I don’t feel any
pressure fighting here, just excitement because this is

To The WBA And James Toney |

To President Gilberto Mendoza:
I am proud to be the World Boxing Association
Heavyweight Champion. As the first Latino to ever win
the world heavyweight title, it is an honor that I have
fought for or defended nine times since August of 2000.
It has come to my attention that, behind my back, James
Toney and his people are attempting to have the WBA lift
or modify the two-year sanction against him fighting for
my title. That punishment was imposed on him May 16,
2005, as a result of his testing positive for his use of
an illegal performance enhancing drug in our April 30th
fight. The WBA Championship Rules against “the use of
drugs…in amounts which are intended to artificially and
disloyally increase the boxer’s performance before or
during a fight” could not be clearer:
“…the challenger shall be disqualified and shall not box
for the title from
World Boxing Association during the next two (2) years
and only after
presentation of medical evidence that he has been
rehabilitated.”
Toney has not appealed this ruling, either to the WBA,
pursuant to its Appeal Regulations, or to the New York
State Athletic Commission. The reason: his explanation
about taking prescription drugs for an arm injury
turning into a performance enhancing anabolic steroid is
a lie. The NYSAC has already rejected this false excuse.
Ask yourself, why has he not appealed? The answer is
obvious: Toney knows that if he does, the results of his
blood tests would be open to the public, the extremely
high levels of the illegal steroid he took would be
revealed, and his “excuse” would be laughed at.
Instead he hides behind this false story and is trying
to have the WBA’s two-year ban lifted in a similar way.
He has already brought shame upon himself and the sport
of boxing by his illegal actions. The WBA would do the
same to itself by not following its rules.
Toney’s failure to appeal is all the justification you
need to reject any request he makes for relief from the
sanctions the rules of the WBA demand, and all that the
rest of the boxing world should need to realize that not
only is Toney a cheat, he is a liar.

On June 18th from the FedEx Forum in
Memphis TN, IBO Light Heavyweight
Champion Glen Johnson will be going up
against Antonio Tarver in a rematch of
the controversial match they fought back
in December of last year. Johnson got
the nod by Split decision last time and
now he wants to prove that his victory
was not a fluke.
Johnson, who has been called The Road
Warrior has had a long hard battle to
the top and the road he traveled was not
paved with gold. It was a bumpy and at
times dirty road, but through it all
Johnson has prevailed and he now sits
atop the Light Heavy division.
