professional boxing to be held at Detroit's Michigan
State Fair Grounds,
Friday, June 10th at 7pm. The night will feature the
talents of up and
coming stars in all weight divisions as well as top
local and international
prospects.
The Main Event, billed "The Legend Continues" will
feature Detroit's own
Ronald "Motor City Cobra" Hearns, son of famed boxing
champion Thomas "The
Hitman" Hearns. See the younger Hearns defend his
undefeated record of 5-0
(three by way of knockout), as he takes on Indiana's
Eddie Rodriguez in a 6
round Middleweight battle. Proud father "The Hitman" is
confirmed to attend
the night's festivities.
The Co-Main Event is a 10-round title fight for the
Female WIBA Vacant
Lightweight Championship, featuring Kara "KO" Ro as she
defends her
undefeated record of 12-0 (7 by way of knockout). Ro,
out of Windsor,
Ontario, Canada is the current WIBA Intercontinental
Lightweight Champion
and she will take on Miami's Belinda "Brown Sugar"
Laracuente with a record
of 21-7 (9 KO's).
On the under card is Detroit's Marlon "Trouble Man"
Thomas, 33-5-1 (19
KO's). Thomas is the current UBA Welterweight
Intercontinental Champion and
he will go up against a tough Vincent Thompson, 22-6 (9
KO's) from
Washington, DC in a 10-round bought.
Other notable fighters on the card include Heavyweight
Kevin "Big
Man/Franchise" Burnett, Welterweight Lanardo Tyner, and
Jr. Middleweight
Brian "The Lion" Mihtar, all fighting for First Round
Productions.
The weigh-in will be held at Greektown Casino, Thursday,
June 9th at 6pm in
the Apollo lounge. Fight fans, media and all press are
invited to attend.
On fight night, doors will open at 7:00 and the first
fight is at 8:00 pm.
Tickets are priced starting at $30 up to $200 and will
be available at the

Australia’s most celebrated boxer, Kostya Tszyu,
has not fired long-time trainer and mentor, Johnny
Lewis, contrary to reports coming out of Russia
today.
Team Tszyu were made aware of the unfounded accusation
this evening during transit at Bangkok en route to
Sydney.
The press release falsely implied Tszyu’s manager, Matt
Watt, had issued a statement confirming Tszyu had sacked
Lewis, though there were no direct quotes from Watt to
accompany this report.
“There is absolutely no truth in this statement and it
is disappointing that someone has released false
information that is potentially damaging to both Kostya
and Johnny,” said Matt Watt from Changi Airport.

Former World Boxing
Council super flyweight champion Gerry “Geronimo”
Penalosa (48-5-2, 33 KOs) headlines “Friday Night
Fights,” promoted by Knockout Boxing in association with
the Rivera Brothers, Friday evening (June 10) at the
National Guard Armory in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Penalosa, reigning WBF super flyweight champion, fights
out of his native Philippines. He has been inactive
since capturing the WBF title last November by
registering a seventh-round TKO of Bangsaen Sithpraprom.
The slick southpaw squares off against Felix Murillo
(15-3), who replaced Colombian veteran Reynaldo Hurtado
Arendo.
2003 Pan-Am Games silver medalist Castulo “El Poderoso”
Gonzalez (4-0, 1 KO), fighting out of Wilmington (MA)
via Guatamala, in his first six-round match faces New
York City featherweight John Seme in the co-feature.

This Saturday at the MCI Center in
Washington D.C. there is a huge fight scheduled for
the Showtime PPV card. No, not the Tyson vs. McBride
fiasco, I'm talking about the bout for the WIBA
Super Middleweight Battle. That's right, the fight
of the night will be Champ Laila Ali (20-0,17
KO's) taking on the little known but formidable foe
Erin Toughill (6-1-1). Now I know, at first glance
the records make this one appear to be a certain
mismatch, but before you make plans to run to the
pizza parlor during this fight you better hear me
out. First of all, Erin is not some overweight woman
who won a couple tough guy competitions, Erin is a
young woman in her prime who is in top shape and is
a fine athlete in her own right! Along with her
professional boxing career, Erin spends her time as
a pro "No Holds Barred" fighter and has a 6-2-1
record in that ultimate fighting sport. Unlike most
of Ali's previous victims, Erin is not going to run
the first time she gets popped in the mouth, and at
a tall 5'10", Erin will be looking Laila directly in
the eye as she mounts an attack of her own,
something Ali is not used to seeing.

On an overcast day in the upscale 90210
city, # 1 WBC ranked Super Lightweight Floyd Mayweather Jr.
sat down for lunch with selected media members to discuss
his upcoming HBO Pay-Per-View bout on June 25th with WBC
Champ, Arturo "Thunder" Gatti.
In all honesty, I went into this
luncheon with a bit of an attitude about the two-time champ,
and it wasn't positive, to say the least! Like most people I
had become irritated by Mayweathers brash attitude and
seemingly over the top arrogance.
After sitting down and having lunch with the young man, I
must say that I have formed a whole new opinion for Floyd
Jr. I found Mayweather to be a very self confident fighter
who not only says he is the best out there, but he truly
believes it! He was not just talking a bunch of trash in
order to sell tickets today, he was just answering the
questions posed to him in the most honest and forthright way
he could. Floyd knows he is good, perhaps one of the best,
and he has no problem admitting to his place amongst the
pound for pound best.
What a lot of us don't know is that Floyd is happiest when
he is with his family, he loves his kids and he made it
perfectly clear that they are the most important things in
his life, not the belts, not the money, but family! You have
to admire that even if you don't like Mayweather himself.
Once again it is Boxing2005's honor to bring you complete
audio of the luncheon, this way you can draw your own
conclusions on the fighter who will be putting it all on the
line next month in Atlantic City.

As Chicago began to get over the shock of the
devastating blow that sent the pride of Poland through
the United Center ropes, a Ferocious visitor dropped in
on the Windy City to promote an upcoming bout. The
slowly growing boxing town of Chicago will graciously
host their second World Class bout within the last year
when Ferocious Fernando Vargas and Rocky Juarez will
bring the second largest Mexican-American contingency to
its feet August 20 in All State Arena.
Fernando Vargas (26-2, 23KO) will face the Spaniard
Javier Castillejo (58-5, 39
KO) at Jr.-Middleweight as a co-main event with Rocky
Juarez (23-0, 16 KO) squaring off against In Jin Chi of
South Korea (30-2, 18 KO) at featherweight.
Though the money and corporate glory remain well kept in
the deserts of Las Vegas, the noble fighter from Oxnard
chose to fight amongst his people in hopes of capturing
boxing glory. Despite the promoter warfare and politics
that have surrounded this fight, Main Events has
remained devoted to their task of bringing Vargas back
to the top of the boxing world.

Exploding the
Sugar Ray Robinson/Muhammad Ali Myths |

The two names in the title refer to the boxing
standards by which all other fighters are judged;
heavies are measured by Ali whilst P4P fighters
are inevitably compared negatively to Ray Robinson.
However we need to ask ourselves if we genuinely pick
these men as our personal best or do we just let regular
boxing cliché and convention pick them for us? If this
is the case there is a problem. If one was to pick the
winner of a fight based on a fistful of cliché and the
odd boxing truism the prediction game would fall apart
at the seams. Predicting fights, as well as picking
great fighters, needs to be an exact science rather than
following the general consensus like so many lemmings
(Note to Gary Randall if your underlings are lemmings
they follow you…right over the edge of the
cliff). So let us try a little experiment:

this article is not the Jose Luis Cruz, known as
"Chelin", (32-0-2, 27 KO's), that was
incorrectly named as Bojorquez opponent in many
of the so called top Internet Fight News sites!
The fighter was not the undefeated fighter from
Mazatlan Mexico, but instead was a 12-12-3
fighter from San Diego by way of Mexico City!
It's amazing to me how a site can claim to be
the 800,000 pound Gorilla yet they don't even
know who is stepping into the ring on fight
night!

when he knocked out Jose Luis Cruz of Mexico
City at 1:10 of round 7 in the main event of the
aptly called “Path to Glory” card put on by
Thompson Boxing Promotions at the Doubletree in
Ontario Friday night.

Statement From Tszyu

In one of the finest boxing matches seen in the UK in
recent years, Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton overcame
significant odds to beat Kostya Tszyu and become the new
IBF super lightweight world champion.
Galant in defeat, Kostya Tszyu showed the heart of a
champion and accepted the loss by praising the
performance of Hatton.
“Ricky is a great champion,” said Tszyu after the fight.
“He deserved to win. The better fighter won on the
night.”
Hatton fought a tactical fight, continually charging in
to smother Tszyu’s punches. Tszyu tried to create
distance, but was unable to land his trademark power
punches to thwart the onslaught from Hatton. Both
fighters traded heavy blows, but it was Hatton who’s
busier work rate commanded the attention of the judges.
After 11 hard fought brutal rounds, the referee stopped
the contest at the request of Tszyu’s corner.
Tszyu was given a standing ovation by the 22,000-strong
Mancunian crowd, testament to the level of respect they
have for the celebrated champion. But it was Hatton that
delivered the most moving endearment.
“If I can be half the champion Kostya Tszyu was, I’ll be
a very proud man,” said Hatton.
Tszyu’s long-time trainer, Johnny Lewis, offered further
praise for his charge.
“I’ve been proud of Kostya Tszyu in victory so many
times and equally proud of him in defeat today,” said
Lewis.
At 35, Tszyu will now be forced to consider his future.
A decision will not be made until Tszyu has discussed
plans with his family and management team.
Tszyu has been cleared of any serious injury by the
attending doctor.

All His Critics Are Wrong, Ricky Hatton is Right! |

I include myself in the camp that were patently wrong
about Hatton, as soon as the fight ended it became clear
just why critics can be so frustrating as immediately my
mind started to conjure up excuses for what had just
happened; the fact is that Hatton, with no proviso’s,
soundly beat a living legend in Tszyu. Hatton promised
over and over that come the big occasion he would rise
like cream, he was true to his word in the most
devastating fashion imaginable.
As the fighters made their way to the ring there seemed
to be a nervousness about Ricky which made me feel that
the occasion had swallowed him up a little, the first
round seemed to bear this out as the Hitman advanced in
straight lines with the intention of setting the early,
murderous pace, this initially seemed suicidal but in
the end was the undoing of Kostya. Make no mistake this
was a scrappy clinch filled fight but even this favored
Hatton as he was gradually sapping the strength of the
champion on the inside, all the pre - fight talk of
Hitman having to make major changes proved to be
mistaken as he fought his usual fight, he just applied a
little more thought to it for this contract. Still, the
first round indicated that the occasion had gotten to
Ricky a good deal and Tszyu fans must have sat back and
waited for the inevitable, especially when the pattern
continued in the second round. Hatton was the aggressor
and remarkably by this point was landing cleanly with
right hand of all punches, true to his reputation as a
strategist though the champion came out for the third
with what seemed to be the key to the Hatton puzzle.

When James Leija stopped fighting due to
injury against Mickey Ward, he carried a stigma around
with him for a very long time, even though his injuries
were obvious to all who witnessed the fight.
When the invincible
Roberto Duran turned his back on Ray Leonard and refused
to fight on, he labeled himself a quitter and the term
“No Mas” has become as synonymous with the fighter as
his ‘Hands of Stone” moniker.
Now it’s time for
Kostya Tszyu to face the scrutiny of his fans and his
peers for failing to answer the bell for the final round
of his fight with New 140 pound champion, Ricky Hatton.
In Kostya’s defense, it appeared as though his cornerman
Jimmy Lewis was the one who suggested that Kostya should
not fight on, and to that question Lewis received no
answer from the falling Champ, so as Kostya said, “
Lewis made the decision for me, and I din’t complain!”

Most fighters that quit
usually have a good reason. Some fighters that quit
usually have a severe reason, but Tszyu's reason was "It
Would Be Impossible For Me To Win". Those are not the
words of a true champion and that was not the quitting
of a real champion. That's was Tszyu getting his butt
kicked and deciding he couldn't win. Well, once you
decide that, you have already lost!

to land his left hooks to the body and head. Hatton

So, tonight is the big night and all of Manchester is
getting liquored up as we speak anticipating their
hometown boy to dethrone the lad from down under!
Keep drinking blokes, it ain't gonna happen, no way, no
how.
Hatton says Kostya has not been that "sparkling" in his
last defenses and all he has to do is stay away from
Kostya's haymaker right hand...? If that's not a recipe
for disaster, I don't know what is!
While Ricky has been busy fooling himself about his foe,
Tzsyu has taken on this fight just like all the rest of
his destruction's. He is a consummate professional who
treats this sport like the dangerous business it is and
he prepares himself accordingly! He never underestimates
any of his opponents and he gives them all their due
respect during his preparation!
I know this prediction puts my butt on the line for
ridicule if things should go any other way, but I am
taking a stand and I am sticking by it.
Look, you can go somewhere else and get a prediction
like this, "It'll be fun while it lasts, but it won't
last long." But that is the kind of prediction made by
spineless cowards who run when they have to face the
truth!
For those planning on attending the fight in Manchester
tonight, I have some words of advice, bring your crash
helmets and stay low, when the referee waves this one
off in round one the bottles and chairs will be flying
all over the ring! Remember Hagler vs. Minter?

Brodie Goes Out on His Shield |

Last night the long, event - ridden journey of
Michael Brodie’s world - title quest came to a poignant
and sudden end at the hands of Scott Harrison. It is a
shame for Brodie that he never got the title win his
talent richly deserved but he can take comfort from the
fact that he went out after a third round semi -
comeback that epitomized the fighting spirit, mixed with
no small amount of skill, that has defined his career.
Unlike many of his British peers Brodie sacrificed the
vagaries of a spurious title reign in favour of pursuing
the best possible belts and opponents he could in order
to define himself as a true champion. Unfortunately the
tilt at Harrison came a good two years too late for
Michael and he was unable to build on the inroads he
forged in this brief but thrilling contest. In the end
Harrison was a just winner whilst Brodie headed into
retirement without the belt, any major belt, he so
desperately craved and deserved.

WBO featherweight champ Scott Harrison retained his belt
with a fourth round bodyshot knockout of former WBC
title challenger Michael Brodie tonight.
The finish came quite suddenly as Brodie, who looked to
be well in the fight up until that point, was hit by a
couple of flagrantly low hooks, followed by a borderline
left to the liver which sent him to his knees to be
counted out.
Fighting in the Mancunian challenger’s hometown, the
Cambuslang warrior was nonetheless well represented by
the Tartan army who punctuated the crowd at the M.E.N
arena. The battle lines were drawn from the off, as the
Scot looked to bore forward and use his size advantage
to walk down Brodie, who had to strip naked to make the
weight (Harrison made the 126lb limit on the button at
the first attempt), and looked unsteady on his feet from
the word go. The first round mainly consisted of
Harrison attempting to stalk down Brodie, who used his
feet and fired tentative jabs. With 30 seconds to go, a
left hook staggered Brodie, who replied with a meaty
shot of his own.
Brodie began to get into his groove in the second,
moving well, finding his timing and landing with his
superior variety, while the champion’s meaty looking
blows were mainly taken on the arms or slipped. The
third continued in the same vein, Brodie landing one
cracking right cross, while a frustrated looking
Harrison missed wildly with one wide haymaker.
The fourth began with a more aggressive Harrison looking
to make the fight from the off. Brodie replied with some
strong bodyshots of his own. But, just as the battle was
hotting up, then came the sudden finish. AT the time of
the stoppage, Brodie led by 29-28 on two cards, the
other having Harrison up by the same margin.
In the aftermath, Brodie, four times unsuccessful in
world title warfare, announced his retirement from the
sport, while Harrison’s team talked of potential battles
with top Mexicans Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio
Barrera.
In the chief support, Chorley welterweight prospect
Michael Jennings stopped Gavin Down in the nineth of a
scheduled 10 rounder.

Ike Quartey Arrives In
U.S.
In Preparation For Verno Phillips June 18 |
|
DiBella Entertainment's Ike "Bazooka" Quartey has
arrived in the United States from his native Accra,
Ghana, to complete his training camp and make final
preparations for his fight against Verno Phillips which
will be televised live on HBO on Saturday, June 18, from
the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN.
Quartey (35-2-1, 30 KO's) squares off against fellow
former World Champion Phillips (38-9-1, 20 KO's) as the
co-feature on the Glen Johnson vs. Antonio Tarver world
light heavyweight championship card.
Quartey made his return to the ring a winning one after
a five year hiatus on January 14th of this year by
disposing of Clint McNeil at Azumah Nelson Sports
Complex in Accra via an eighth round TKO.
When asked about his comeback Quartey simply states: "I
am back to win a World Championship. I am back to cement
my legacy. The next step on that journey is on June
18th."
"Ike is in great shape and looks like he hasn't been
away from the ring for five weeks let alone five years,"
stated DBE President Lou DiBella. "His U.S. comeback
fight is against a former two time world champion and
Ike will prove that he is ready for any fighter in the
world."
"I think it is going to be a fantastic fight between two
great former champions," said Arthur Pelullo, president
of Banner Promotions, Inc., Phillips' promoter. "The
winner goes on to be a player in either the 154 or 160
pound division, and I am very excited about Verno's
possibilities."
Verno Phillips had reeled off seven straight wins before
losing a close unanimous decision to the highly regarded
Kassim Ouma on October 2 of last year at Caesars Palace.
Quartey vs. Phillips will be televised live on HBO's
World Championship Boxing on Saturday, June 18 at 10:00

|
World ranked junior welterweight David Diaz, 27-1
(15KO's) got back to business on Thursday night as he
stopped veteran Tyrone Wiggins at the Family Arena in
St. Charles, Missouri. Wiggins who was dominated for the
first three rounds by Diaz's crushing body shots and
upper cuts retired after the third round leading to a
technical knockout victory for the Chicago native. This
was Diaz's first bout back in action since his
disappointing loss to the highly regarded contender
Kendall Holt.
About the fight David said, "It was great to get back in
the ring, use some new things that Fly (Mike Garcia,
Diaz's trainer) and I have worked on and get a decisive
win."
Diaz's next scheduled bout is on the huge HBO televised
night of World Championship Boxing on Saturday, August
20th at the Allstate Arena. Said Diaz, "Fernando and
I've talked about this for years and we're both thrilled
to be fighting on the same card, especially in front of
the great boxing fans in Chicago. The fans of Chicago
are in for a big night as it will be a terrific card
that Main Events and 8 Count Productions are putting

we do it in Chicago." Diaz's bout will be on the off-TV
portion of the event.
Discussing a possible opponent for Saturday, August
20th, Diaz continued, "I want to fight a top ten guy

Mayweather to Judge

Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will be
among the celebrity judges when King of the Cage (www.kingofthecage.com/ring-girls),
the world wide recognized mixed martial arts competition
spearheaded by owner Terry Trebilcock and agent Steve
Karel, will move into the forum of adult-branded pay per
view for the first time when it presents KOTC's Cage
Girls Uncensored, premiering on Thursday, June 9 at
10:00 PM/ET on Events InDemand, the nation's largest pay
per view service.
Known as the most exotic ring girls in the fight world,
KOTC's cage girls from around the world enter the forum
of no-holds-barred on a program previously taped in Las
Vegas. Mayweather, Jr., will be joined by by K-1 MMA
superstar Heath Herring and pro arm wrestler and actor
Eddie DeLuca. For the first time, round card girls
affiliated with KOTC have crossed over to adult P-P-V
Entertainment.
The program will be produced by KOTC Inc., and
Stonecutter Media Ltd.
The stars of the program are: Alicia Cummings, Donna
Louise, Corrie Anne Brown, Samone Henderson, Genna
Wilson, Melinda Williams, Lita Taylor, Nenia Welzenbach,
Nancie Bguyen and Chris Vong.
"King of the Cage is the first formal sports
organization to marry sports with adult entertainment,"
said Karel, a longtime successful producer and
distributor of numerous pay per view brands. "This will
be the first in a series of pay per view programs."

pleased to announce Navarro vs. Pacquiao on ESPN2
Friday, June 17 at the Table Mountain Casino in Friant,
California, just 15 minutes north of Fresno. In the 12
round main event, the fists will be flying as Carlos
Navarro and Bobby Pacquiao battle it out for the WBC
Continental Americas super featherweight championship.
Doors open at 5:30pm and the first bell rings at 6:15pm.
The ESPN2 Friday Night Fights telecast begins live at
10pm ET / 7pm PT.

title, is coming home. Lacy will make his
professional home debut in a mandatory title
defense against former WBC super middleweight
champion ROBIN REID, from Runcorn, England, the
IBF’s top-rated contender. This will be Reid’s
first fight on U.S. soil. Promoted by Gary Shaw
Productions, LLC, in association with One Punch
Productions, Lacy-Reid will take place Saturday,
August 6, at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa,
FL. Showtime will televise it live beginning at

Luis: It's no surprise, because
Mayweather doesn't need much to get his mouth
started, that Mayweather said that you are not at
his level. Yet his uncle and
trainer, Roger Mayweather, considers you to be a
real threat in this division.
What's your take on those comments?
Cotto: Mayweather says that I'm not
at his level... the only thing that he is
saying that is true is that I have fought against
opponents that he has already
fought. The only difference though is that I have
knocked those guys out. As
far as his uncle is concerned, he knows that I pose
a great threat to them in
the ring, his words are evidence enough.

NBA Star Kendall Gill
Turns To Professional Boxing |

Fourteen year NBA veteran Kendall Gill will announce his
intentions to make his professional boxing debut this
summer during a press conference and workout this Friday
morning at 11AM at JABB Boxing Gym located at 410 N.
Oakley, near the intersection of Grand and Western on
Chicago's near northwest side.
Prior to speaking to the press and answering questions,
the Chicago native and University of Illinois grad will
show off his solid boxing skills by shadowboxing,
working the mitts and hitting the speedbag.
Gill has been training at JABB for the last 18 months
and says he is in the best shape of his life. "I'm
taking this very seriously just like the professional
approach I brought to my career in the NBA."
Said Dominic Pesoli, owner of JABB Boxing Gym, "He's
been very serious about this. He wants to make his pro
debut this summer and the press conference and workout
is a great way to show off his skills."

Joe DeGuardia of Joe
DeGuardia’s Star Boxing is proud to announce he has
re-signed exciting Italian heavyweight prospect Vinny
Maddalone to a long-term promotional deal.
Under DeGuardia’s promotional auspice, Maddalone, 23-2
(16), has become one of New York’s most popular boxers,
consistently selling out his appearances. “We’re very
pleased to have re-signed Vinny,” said DeGuardia. “He’s
an exciting fighter in high demand and the hottest
ticket seller in New York and surrounding areas.”
Maddalone was a diamond in the rough when he was brought
to DeGuardia very early in his professional career. The
former minor-league pitcher had no amateur boxing career
and only a handful of Toughman fights before turning
professional.
Building his experience and popularity slowly, DeGuardia
began featuring the muscular Queens native in his
long-term series of shows at Yonkers Raceway, where he
quickly became a huge draw and eventually appeared on
DeGuardia’s Metro TV series more than any other boxer.
“Vinny has grown into a very important part of our
stable. His all-action style never disappoints and he
sells out every time he fights. Casinos clamor to get
him because of the excitement and the number of people
he always brings.”
Maddalone says he is also pleased with the new
promotional deal for a number of reasons. “I’m excited
to re-sign with Joe. This is the only promoter I’ve ever
had; I’ve been with him since day one and it’s always
been great. I’ve been with Joe for six years now. A lot
of guys jump ship on the people who have been loyal to
them, but I’ll stick by the guy who stuck by me and
we’ll get there together.”
The fight Maddalone says he currently wants more than
any other is a rematch with fellow prospect Brian Minto.
The two heavyweights fought an unforgettable war on
ESPN2 last July that Minto, despite being behind on all
scorecards, won by what Maddalone calls a “lucky punch”
tenth-round knockout.
“We may sign a four-fight deal to fight over in Italy,
but the main thing for me right now is getting a Minto
rematch. I’m hoping to fight him again in July on ESPN
and I know Joe is working hard on it.”
“I like Vinny personally as well as professionally,”
added DeGuardia. “He’s a great kid and an all-action
fighter with tons of heart and he’s come a long way in a
very short time. We’ll be looking to keep bringing him
along slowly, but I know Vinny is gong to be a star.
He’s got too much toughness and charisma not to.”
