I would like to open this week’s edition by congratulating
Michael Marrone for an excellent performance last night on the
Warrior’s card in FL last night. For those of you who did not
hear, Marrone knocked out Curtis Taylor (Kevin Montiy never
stepped up claiming Don King would not allow him to take the
fight) in the first round by landing a beautiful right at 2:06.
Marrone outshined fellow prospect J. D. Chapman with some of the
crowd yelling, “Marrone’s going to kill you!” during Chapman’s
bout. I spoke to Gus Curren this morning and things are in the
works for Michael to open up on ESPN on the undercard of the
proposed match up of Oscar Diaz vs. Chris Smith. At twenty years
old, Michael is being brought up right and not rushed into
fights for a payday or by fighting only bums without a pulse.
Next year we can expect more growing and developing Marrone into
the next big star in the heavyweight division. Click

Ornelas Survives 1st Round Knockdown
Enrique Ornelas, now 22-2, with 14 KO's, survived
a first round knockdown to win a unanimous 78-73 score on all
three judges scorecards over Darmel Castillo. Ornelas had hurt
Castillo in the opening round and began to punish him, but not
before getting floored with a right hand. Ornelas went on to win
the remainder of the 8 round fight. Castillo falls to 10-9-2
with 6 KO's.

jumping back into action. Peter shouldn't be so worried what

Don King Set To Stage TV Bouts For Troops
Judah and Brewster Want In On The Action
Boxing promoter Don King told CNN's Wolf Blitzer
Wednesday that he is trying to
stage some televised boxing matches for U.S. troops in Iraq,
with Zab Judah and Lamon Brewster being talked about as fighters
ready to serve up the action, to those who serve our country. If
things go according to plan the fights would be held under the
USO banner and would be broadcast by a to be named TV network.
King will be meeting with President Bush to discuss the plans
for this one of a kind card.
Joey Gilbert-Jimmy Lange 2: Confirmed
Upon reading on the internet that “The Contender”
stars Joey Gilbert and Jimmy Lange would fight a rematch put the
wheels in motion for a confirmation. Rather than relying upon a
radio report, we went straight to the source and called Gilbert
and Schopper Law Firm to get confirmation of the rumor before
going forward with a report. Representatives of Joey Gilbert
confirmed this fight is going to take place at the George Mason
University Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va on February 18. They
also informed us that Joey Gilbert has been released by Gary
Shaw citing reasons that they just did not see eye to eye on
Gilbert’s future. Gilbert’s representatives stated that they are
not worried about fight being scheduled for 12 rounds even
though he has never fought a fight scheduled for more than six.

Ruiz vs. Valuev Final Press Conference
The final press conference prior to John "The
Quietman" Ruiz's defense of his World Boxing Association
heavyweight championship against Nicolay "Giant Russian" Valuev,
which will take place on Saturday at Max Schmeling Halle here in
Berlin, was staged today before a full audience at the Maritim
proArte Hotel.
The fight will be shown on free German television on ARD channel
1 but will not be seen in America and is co-presented by
Berlin-based Sauerland Event, promoter of Valuev, and Don King
Productions, promoter of Ruiz.

UIBO Champ Gets KO Win

Purnell Gates, UIBO Welterweight Champion, Won a very lopsided
Ko victory over John Battle on Saturday night in Blairstown
Iowa. Gates was just to much for his opponent who tried to fight
back with no luck. By the end on round 1 Gates was landing shots
at will as to toy with Battle ( maybe for talking smack before
the fight) and by the 3rd round landing hard combinations which
forced the Referee to mercilessly stop the fight. Gates says he
expected more out of his opponent from a previous fight between
them but still had promised a KO victory !

Coming off his spectacular victory in October,
Enrique Ornelas (21-2,14 KO's) is ready for his next challenge
as he is set to face Darmel Castillo (10-9-2,6 KO's), this
Thursday night in the Goossen promoted card in Lemoore
California.
This should be a good test for Ornelas as Castillo is a tough
foe who has been in the ring with some stiff competition.
We had a chance to chat with Enrique before he headed north for
his bout and we got his thoughts on this upcoming bout as well
as finding out about his time in Big Bear as a sparring partner

On April 30, HBO profiled the current heavyweight champions, who
their next fight was against and analyzed their chances of
unifying the titles. The fighters profiled were Jawny Ruiz,
James Toney, Hasim Rahman, Vitali Klitschko, Lamon Brewster,
Andrew Golota and Chris Byrd. While two of them are currently
out of the running, the others are still in the mix. Now that
the year has come to an end, the state of the heavyweight
division is still a wreck, however, the key players’ positions

Vitali Klitschko Seeking Another Title
In March of 2006, former WBC Heavyweight Champion
will toss his hat into a new ring, that of the Ukranian
Parliament. Klitschko, who has always been outspoken about his
political views, is to top the party list of a newly formed bloc
that includes a party headed by the country's finance minister
and the Pora youth movement, which helped organize last year's
Orange Revolution mass protests. Klitschko also refused to
speculate about a bid for Kiev's mayoral post. Vitali, is
extremely popular in the Ukraine and was a supporter of the
Orange Revolution, which propelled Viktor Yushchenko to the
presidency. Yushchenko's political party also tried to persuade
Klitschko to join its party ranks. Under election law, Ukrainian
voters cast ballots for a political party, which then
distributes seats based on its party list. Parties try to put
high-profile names on their list to attract voters, even though
the person might give up the seat to someone else lower down the
list. Klitschko retired after a knee injury forced him to pull
out of a long-delayed title defense against Hasim Rahman.

mandatory Jermain Taylor vs. Winky Wright mandatory

Winky To Jermain: "It's Time To
Serve Your Mandatory Sentence!"
Fighting off the lingering effects of a severe
week-long chest and head cold and a spirited battle by the IBF's
top-rated middleweight contender, two time world champion and
WBC/WBA No. 1 middleweight contender WINKY WRIGHT won a decisive
unanimous decision over Sam Soliman Saturday night at the
Mohegan Sun Arena. Wright, 50-3 (25 KOs), from St. Petersburg,
FL, collected a milestone 50th victory while snapping Soliman's
three-year, 19-bout winning streak on scores of 117-110, 115-112
and 115-113 in the WBC-sanctioned title elimination bout. It was
the 11th consecutive victory for Wright going back to the
disputed majority decision loss to Fernando Vargas in 1999.

San Juan Championship Boxing Night -

During the course of the year, the boxing public has enjoyed the
hit boxing series "San Juan Boxing Nights" presented by local
promotional company Puerto Rico Best Boxing. The winning formula
has been the same, a packed Coliseito Pedrin Zorrilla with up
and coming prospects battling it out in what is called here on
the island "boxeo caliente", which literally translated means
"hot boxing". In 2005 there were five installments of this
boxing program, all televised on the Telefutura channel. This
year, the Rivera bros., the minds behind Puerto Rico Best
Boxing, treated us with a bonus installment, "San Juan
Championship Boxing Night". This time the venue changed, instead
of the smaller Pedrin Zorrilla it was moved to the much larger
Roberto Clemente Coliseum, and three of the five pay - per -
view fights were championship bouts. The Rivera bros. even threw
in a heavyweight bout to replace the highly anticipated bout
between local favorite Henry "El Nitro" Bruseles and Colombian
rival Ricardo "Mochuelo" Torres. Ricardo Torres had to pull out
of the event due to an operation on his right hand. Here's all

Wright Wins Unanimously Over
Soliman In Surprisingly Good Fight

It wasn't fight of the year, but it sure was entertaining and
action filled, as Winky Wright, now 50-3 with 25 KO's, and Sam
Soliman went to battle through 12 heated rounds that ended in a
unanimous decision for Wright.
In round 1, Soliman came out with his unusual style, punching
from all angles and often. He was non-stop and it appeared that
he could not keep that pace up for long, but that proved to be
wrong down the long stretch. He did land some good shots on
Wright and appeared to set him off pace for the moment.

A Star Is Born In San Diego - Walter Dario Matthysse
Golden Boy Promotions' latest signee, Argentina's
Walter Dario Matthysse, made quite an impression in his United
States debut Thursday night at the 4th and B Club, stopping
well-regarded Xavier Tolliver in a single round.
"Matthysse was explosive and this is the type of performance we
knew he would deliver after scouting him over the last year,"
said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. "The
welterweight division has a new star, and we're ready for all
comers."

Travis Hartman, while only twenty-two years old, has been

156-13 amateur record which proudly includes three national
titles. Entering the ring with a professional record of 5-2-1 (4
KO’s), losing his last two bouts, the scrappy native of St.
Joseph, MO., realized a victory against the highly favored
hometown hero would be a tremendous boost for the skilled
