Alcine Provokes Controversy |
|
By Daniel Cloutier
The Montrealer Joachim Alcine, a former WBA super welterweight
champion of the world, has provoked a huge controversy today at
the final press conference of this boxing show presented by the
GYM group, Saturday night at the Bell Theater Center.
Alcine, who will fight the young Montrealer David Lemieux in a
WBC International middleweight bout, said he lost all respect
for the GYM group.
“I lost my WBA world title to the Puertorican Daniel Santos in
July 2008 here, at the Uniprix Stadium, and the GYM group is
certainly responsible for that terrible result (KO in the sixth
round),” said Alcine. “Few days before the fight, I meet Dino
Marchitello, Yvon Michel’s business partner, to tell him to
cancel the fight. Why? I could not see from my left eye, because
a retinal detachment. Dino told me, “Joachim, if you force us to
cancel the fight, you will lose your world title”. Then, I took
the chance to fight, and I could not see coming the final punch
threw by Santos. My divorce with the GYM group was a perfect
thing for me.”

The Case For 15 Rounds |

By William Trillo
This weekends Cotto/Margarito fight opened the door to a lot of
different opinions as to who was actually in control of the
fight at the time of the stoppage. Obviously if you were a Cotto
fan you saw things just as the Doctor did and are happy with the
decision to stop the fight. If you sided with Margarito you may
feel he was coming on stronger and Cotto was ready to fade like
he did in the first meeting. One fan took the time to write to
us and gave his well thought out argument:
Hello Bill
Watching the Maragarito/Cotto fight last night reminded me of a
problem I have had with Title fights now being only 12 rds.
Everyone will get on the Cotto out boxing Margarito band wagon
now that the fight was stopped and Cotto being well ahead on the
score cards, but there were marked signs of the wear and tear of
Margaritos relentless pursuit and Cottos depleting himself was
starting to take its toll.

Alcine Predicts Bad News For Lemieux |
|
By Daniel Cloutier
Joachim Alcine met the Montréal journalists Monday at the end of
the afternoon, at the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Airport. He said
that he had perfect preparation in Miami.
“I had perfect physical preparation, and mentally, it can not be
better, said Alcine. There is no doubt in my mind that I will
beat David Lemieux. David does not show me the respect that I
deserve, I will punish him severally. In my last fight, I was
hot hungry, I did not show a killer instinct, but I will get
this killing instinct next Saturday. I will feel like a lion,
when the door of his cage is opened. What happens when a lion
get out of his cage? He his jumping on his prey, and the prey
cannot survive. David thinks he can knock me out, but he will
get a surprise, a big surprise. And when he realizes that our
fight will be long, he will panic, not me. Lemieux said that a
“New Lemieux” will face me, but I can tell him he will face a
“New Alcine” with a lot of intelligence and experience.”

Rodriguez Dominates Wolak |
|
Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing's prize Jr.
Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-2 14KO Danbury, CT) scored
the most impressive win of his career Saturday night at the sold
out Madison Square Garden as he pitched a near shutout over
highly rated Pawel Wolak (29-2-1 19KO Mt. Arlington, NJ) over
the 10 round distance. The unanimous scores read 98-92, 98-91,
and 100-90 by the 3 judges at ringside.
The rematch of their first epic encounter on July 15 of this
year was vastly different as Rodriguez used a razor like jab and
sharp combinations from the opening bell to stymie Wolak's
attack. Wolak tried his best in his ever pressing style but one
could see early that this was going to be Rodriguez' night.

As defined by americanidioms.net
Made in the shade: One has an easy time in life or in a
given situation. Finding things working to one's
benefit.
A few weeks ago someone very close to Antonio
Margarito's inner circle admitted to me that Tony had to
kick Cotto's ass in their rematch or he would always
have to live with the speculation & scrutiny surrounding
of those tainted hand wraps. Margarito did not come
close to delivering on Saturday night and the majority
of the articles written after the fight are bringing
into question the validity of Margarito's entire career.

Cotto Exploits Weakened Eye To Defeat Margarito;
& Undercard Results From The Garden |
|
By Tim Donaldson
Photos: Dorotea Arango
Boxing, like any type of combat, is all
about finding your opponent’s weaknesses and using them
to your advantage. If you cannot find a weakness, you
try to create one. When Margarito defeated Cotto in
their first fight, he kept going to the body of Cotto,
wearing him down, so he could exploit that weakness at
the end of the fight. If Margarito did use plaster in
that fight as Cotto and many others believe, that too
gave him an advantage. Cotto, likewise, exploited
Margarito’s weaknesses.

Abner Mares’ Victory Speaks For Itself,
He Is Just Better Than Agbeko!!! |
|
By Carlos Cordoba
Abner Mares retained his IBF and WBC Silver Bantamweight titles
by Soundly defeating Joseph Agbeko on Saturday night at the
Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. The thrilling bout was the main
event of “Mares vs. Agbeko II,” hosted by Golden Boy Promotions,
Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions in association

The highly anticipated rematch did not take long to heat up.
Both fighters came out willing to exchange making it a hard
opening round to call. The action seeped into the second assault
that saw Abner Mares connect with a left hook and also suffer a
cut beside his right eyebrow as a result of an incidental head
bunt. The following rounds continued to be particularly
challenging to score as Agbeko moved forward and Abner Mares
countered.

Povetkin Knocks Out Boswell
To Defend WBA Heavyweight Title |

|
Photos: Photo Wende
Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KOs) made a
spectacular first defence of his WBA Heavyweight Title,
knocking out Cedric Boswell (35-2, 26 KOs) in the eighth
round of their clash in Helsinki, Finland. Fighting in
front of a sell-out crowd of 12,738 fans at a rocking
Hartwall Areena, Povetkin looked sharp from the first
bell, cleverly picking his opponent apart. The 2004
Olympic gold medal winner took away Boswell´s jab and
landed good combinations throughout. He turned it on in
the seventh when he pelted the brave American with
powerful shots – only for the bell to save him. In the
eighth, Povetkin then finished him off with a series of
hard punches that knocked Boswell down and out. “This
was a good win for me,” he stated afterwards. “The
preparation with Teddy Atlas had gone very well. I did
what I was supposed to do in the ring and I am happy
about the result.”

Cotto "Plasters" Margarito
"Wraps" Up Long Awaited Revenge |

By William Trillo
Photos: Chris Farina - Top Rank
“I need to remove this thorn from my
flesh.” Those were the words Miguel Cotto used when
asked why he wanted to fight Antonio Margarito again. On
Saturday night in New York’s Madison Square Garden, WBA
light middleweight champ Miguel Angel Cotto exacted
revenge on Antonio Margarito and stopped his arch enemy
by TKO just three seconds into round ten 10. Margarito
was unable to continue due to swelling around his right
eye…YES, THAT EYE! Truth be told the fight didn’t’ have
any action in the 10th but a few seconds ticked off as
Margarito and his corner pleaded for one more round to
no avail, the Doctor had seen enough.

Abner Sets The Record Straight |

By Carlos Cordoba, Bret Newton & Marlene
Marquez @ Ringside
Bantamweight Abner Mares defeated Joseph
Agbeko for the second time and cleared up any
controversy that was left over from the first fight.
Agbeko opened a cut over Mares eye early but it was
Mares who did the most to take the decision but the
118-110 scores across the board seemed a bit extreme.
After the fight Mares said he was happy to prove the
first victory was not a fluke while Agbeko seemed to
feel his was on the wrong end of the decision. Mares
retains his IBF bantamweight & WBC Silver bantamweight
title.

Gunn Stops Jackson, Retains Bareknuckle Title |
|
The scene last night for Bobby Gunn's first title
defense of his bareknuckle boxing championship was something out
of a movie--a large open room in a warehouse; no glamorous
arena, no ring, no concession stands...last night wasn't about
entertainment, it was about one thing--fighting.
When Ernest Jackson made his walk through the crowd as he
prepared himself to go to war, he was overwhelmed by a sea of
Bobby Gunn's supporters, roughly 130 or so in total. The cheers
and praise for Gunn didn't affect Jackson as he waited for the
fight to begin.
