Special Billy's Boxing Blog: Featuring Tim Donaldson
My Two Cents On The Khan vs. Peterson Fight,
For What It Is Worth

By Tim Donaldson
I was supposed to be in Washington DC for the fight, but due to a conflict of interest, I was home instead. The thought of missing the fight didn’t seem too upsetting at first. I figured I knew the outcome already. Kahn, in my mind, seemed to be the easy favorite. But that was not the case. The fight was much tougher than Kahn expected, as was referee Joe Cooper.

When the scores were read at the end, Peterson won by split decision. However, if you add the two points deducted from Kahn back into those scores, Kahn would have won by unanimous decision. That seems to be the point Kahn was making at the end of the fight when he said he was fighting two people in the ring. If not for the referee, Kahn implies that he would have won. But what about the first round? If you add the point back to Peterson for the knock down in that round because you believe it was a push, then you have a majority draw.   All Change For Turner -
McCauley Out, Frontin In This Wednesday

In the World of pro boxing nothing, but nothing, is set in stone until the very moment you actually enter the ring on fight night. So many things can, and do, go awry that it’s definitely a matter of be prepared for any occurrence, especially a last minute change of opponent, which is just what has happened to Welterweight prospect Freddie Turner this week.

This coming Wednesday Freddie was due to face British Masters Light Middleweight Champion Kevin McCauley in a non-championship bout. Without doubt a tough assignment for the Canning Town youngster with just four pro bouts, all wins, under his belt, but with legendary father and son team Jimmy and Mark Tibbs masterminding his preparations Freddie was more than confident he was thoroughly prepared in every way for the showdown.   HBO Commentators Up In Arms
Over Khan Point Deductions

By Bret "The Threat" Newton
HBO's Max Kellerman & Harold Lederman kept bringing up the term "Hard Warning" during the Lamont Peterson vs. Amir Khan last night in Washington, DC. They made it clear that they were almost baffled by referee Joe Cooper's choice to deduct two points from Khan in rounds 7 and 12, without a "hard warning". Golden Boy's Oscar DeLaHoya & Eric Gomez also appeared shocked, but Khan is their fighter, so their feelings go without saying.

However, the points were rightly justified. The fact one point was taken in round 7 and another had to be taken in the final round, all with spoken warnings from the referee before and in between, proves more points should have been taken. Khan was clearly not following the rules throughout the entire fight. It was obvious he got in trouble in rounds 3 and 4 and his Plan B was to survive, which included holding, head-locking, holding Peterson's head down and pushing.

  Alcine Is Looking To Go To Welterweight;
Stevenson Eyes Bute Or Andrade/George Winner

Daniel Cloutier
Two hours after his surprising win against the young Montrealer David Lemieux in the ring of the Bell Center Theater in Montréal, Joachim Alcine, the former WBA super welterweight champion of the world, said a rematch with Lemieux is not probable because he is looking to continue his career in the welterweight division.

“Lemieux was certainly 15 pounds heavier than me last night,’ said Alcine. “The Middleweight division is not natural for me. I know that with the good training that I do now, I can evolve in the 147 pounds division. I will have a serious discussion about that with my trainer my manager in the next week. A rematch with Lemieux will be out of question if I am boxing in the welterweight division.

  A History of Organized Violence
Have you ever wondered if people have been fighting in an organized way forever? Have you ever had someone tell you that prize fights are not civilized and barbaric? The truth is the art of fighting is something that has been a part of our culture for nearly as long as mankind has been forming large societies.

It doesn’t matter if you are hitting a punching bag or moving around the ring, the practice of organized fighting for sport is something that is a part of human nature. There is something primal within us that rages to burst out, whether it is defending yourself or simply testing your skills.   Peterson Derails Khan With
Hard Fought Majority Decision

Lamont Peterson (now 29-1-1, 14 KO's) won the WBA Super World, and IBF Light Welterweight Titles from Amir Khan through twelve hard fought rounds that may demand an immediate rematch. Khan started fast, and even looked to end the show, but the middle rounds belonged to Peterson who blasted away with big punches that sent Khan into panic mode that consisted of running, holding and two points being deducted.

In round 1, Khan jumped on Peterson to try and set the tempo. Peterson would trip on referee Joe Cooper's feet in which was rightfully ruled a slip. Peterson would later land a big left hook on the chin of Khan who then pushed Peterson down, this time the referee wrongly ruled a knockdown.

In rounds 3 and 4, Peterson had his biggest opening moments, staggering Khan around the ring with big right hands and left hooks, then setting up the uppercut which would snap Khan's head far back from his guard.

  Alcine Surprises Lemieux In Montreal
Daniel Cloutier
The young Montrealer David Lemieux promised to his fans to hurt the veteran Joachim Alcine in each round, Saturday evening in the ring of the Bell Center Theater.

He did not do it.

Alcine, a former WBA super welterweight champion of the world, was more energitic than Lemieux in the second half of the fight, and his good preparation paid off. Alcine took a lot of power shots in the first half of the fight, but never did he fall. Alcine (33-2-1) won the fight by majority decision (116-112, 116-112 and 114-114), and he dethroned Lemieux as WBC International middleweight champion.

The Montrealer Colombian boxer Eleider Alvarez won the most important bout of his career Saturday evening in the ring of the Bell Center Theater. He won the NABO North American light heavyweight championship in beating the Dominican Emiliano Cayetano by KO in the first round. Alvarez will probably be ranked in the Top 15 in the WBO ratings by next month.

A very hard puncher, Alvarez (7-0-0), who was ranked third in the world in the amateurs three years ago, floored Cayetano (21-4-0) three times in the first round, forcing the referee to stop the fight, in calling an automatic KO. The time of the KO was 2.33 minutes after the beginning of the fight.

In search of redemption, Alcine is well aware that this fight might be his last chance to shine and eventually reclaim a world title. The fighter known as “Ti Joa’’ can’t afford to lose this fight.

Jeff Emond Jeffrey: Good afternoon Joachim! Only one day before the fight, how are you?

Joachim Alcine: I’m doing very good and I’m great shape.

JEJ: It seems the hostility went up this week between you and your former promoter Yvon Michel. What can you tell us about it?

JA: It’s quite simple. My former team GYM weren’t there for me when I needed them. They don’t wanna take responsibility for anything that went wrong with my career, especially with the Daniel Santos fight in July 2008.

Weigh-In Day In Montreal…& Much More
By Daniel Cloutier
It was the weigh in today at the restaurant 9-4-10 in The Bell Center. David Lemieux and Joachim Alcine hit the scales but did not make new comments although there were some comments about Alcine made, then I sat few minutes with Adonis Stevenson.

THE WEIGH IN

David Lemieux, Joachim Alcine, Adonis Stevenson and Aaron Pryor Jr. all had perfect weights at the weigh in and had no troubles at all at the scale.
It was 159.2 for Lemieux, 156.4 for Alcine for their middleweight fight and in Super Middle weights it was 166.4 for Stevenson and 165.6 for Pryor.

Stink-O-Meter Pegged By
"Clean Knockout" Release

By William Trillo
While going through my daily press release email's on Thursday morning I came across one with the subject reading: JOE HANKS SCORES CLEAN KNOCKOUT. Before I could open the email the Stink-O-Meter was screaming. As I cautiously opened the email and began to read it became clear to me why the meter was in full Red Alert. The press release started by reading: Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing undefeated Heavyweight Joe Hanks (18-0 12KO ) scored an impressive 2nd round knockout win over Franklyn Edmondson this past Saturday night at The Greensoboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC.

Having already been privy to the stiffs they have been feeding Hanks I became very wary about one glaring omission in that sentence.

The omission you ask?

Well, although Hank's blown up record was available, his foe Franklyn Edmondson was not extended the same courtesy...and neither were we.

Doing a little research it was gravely apparent why. Click Here For Full Blog

"Capital Showdown" Final Press Conference Quotes
Photos: Delane Rouse - Hoganphotos/Golden Boy

Amir Khan: "I always said when I was younger, I wanted to fight in different states and different areas of the world because I want to be the best and prove that I'm the best.

"We know how good Lamont is. He's strong. He's only lost one fight in his whole career. It's going to be a tough night and you have a lot of support here, but I think we will have a lot more support [than people think].

Lamont Peterson:
"I've been talking for two months now. I'm tired of talking. I'm ready to fight.

"I don't like to be amped or crazy going into the ring because I'm a thinker. I just think about the game plan, go over that a few times and before I know it, they're raising my hand at the end of the fight. I just keep going over that over and over again until it's time to go.   Alcine & Lemieux Get “Nosey” On TV
By Daniel Cloutier
The Montrealers boxers Joachim Alcine and David Lemieux will be nose to nose in the ring Saturday evening, few seconds before the beginning of this WBC International middleweight championship, at the Bell Center Theater. Today, they were close to nose to nose in a TV interview in Montréal.

“The more the moment is approaching the more I am persuaded that this fight will turn like the fight between Mayweather-Ortiz,” said Alcine. “Lemieux will try to take my head off, he will be unable to do it, he will become frustrated, and he will start to commit technical errors that will put him in trouble. Like Floyd Mayweather Jr. did against Ortiz, I will be patient, difficult to touch and accurate with all my punches. In the second half of the fight, Lemieux will suffer like never before.”
