Cozumel Closing Thoughts |
|
|
By William Trillo
Okay, so fight night in Mexico this past
Saturday night didn’t go exactly as planned, that goes
without saying. But in all honesty the rest of the week
went beautifully.
The resort town of Cozumel was ready for the show and
with a fight card a dozen bouts deep there was no doubt
the island was in store for more boxing here than ever
before. But even those with a keen sense of boxing
betting insight could not have predicted how the Main
Event battle would eventually turn out.
We arrived onto the island on Monday afternoon, the
people were friendly and the sunset was like a painting
without flaw.

"They can't hide from me forever," said Sillakh of fellow top
light heavies Jean Pascal (WBC #3 ranked), Chad Dawson (WBC #1
ranked), and Bernard Hopkins (WBC champion). "Enough excuses.
Just get in the ring and fight. We're fighters."

Amir Khan & Richard Schaefer
Teleconference Transcript |
|
Richard Schaefer: I know it's a holiday
week for many and I really appreciate that you guys are taking
time out of your schedule. I'd like make some opening marks,
remarks, walk you quickly through where we stand and what the
next steps are, um, as it relates to Amir and the fight and
everything, and then turn it over for Amir for some comments and
then opening it up for questions.
Well, first of all let me state that the purpose of this call is
in no way or shape to attack or question the performance of
Lamont Peterson and his team. I think Lamont fought a very good
fight, it was an exciting fight. In fact, many people feel it
was another fight of the year candidate, so this is absolutely
nothing about taking anything away from Lamont Peterson. It is
simply to look at the facts, present the facts, and give the
people involved an opportunity to correct their mistakes. It's
basically about doing the right thing.

Kariz Kariuki on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic
City, is already back in the gym looking and forward to his next
bout.
"I felt really good in there. Probably the best I have felt in
years," said the energized Miranda. "I trained hard and was in
great shape. Kariz hit me a few times, but I was able to walk
right through them. I knew I could hurt him with the left and as
soon as I saw the opportunity I took advantage of it."

By William Trillo
Hello William,
Well, I didn’t imagine I’d be thinking to myself Sunday morning…
“Gee, I’m sure glad I couldn’t make it to Cozumel for Librado’s
fight that would have been a total waste of time.”
Honestly, that’s not exactly what I was thinking. It would have
been great to see Librado, whether the fight went on or not, and
I’ve never been to Cozumel. Cozumel looks way more inviting this
time of year than Montreal or Copenhagen! I’m afraid I just
couldn’t pull off the trip.

Andre Ward & Virgil Hunter's Success Could Land Them Fighter &
Trainer Of The Year Awards |

It has been a tremendously successful 2011 for
Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KOs), who after a twenty-six month journey
is now the Super Six World Boxing Classic champion; the WBA
champion; the WBC champion; the Ring magazine champion and the
No. 1 Super Middleweight in the world.
Right there with him, is Ward's crafty veteran trainer and
godfather of 18 years, Virgil Hunter, who like Ward is soft
spoken, but filled with wisdom. Hunter recognized the talent and
drive in Andre from the moment he walked into his gym. Virgil
began training the 9-year old Ward and guided him to a gold
medal in the 2004 Olympics.

Richard Schaefer’s Thoughts On
Andrade vs. George Situation |
|
By William Trillo
Representatives from Golden Boy were tight lipped after Leon
Margules advised his fighter Donovan George to pull out of his
scheduled fight with Librado Andrade this past Saturday night
but Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was not so quiet on Monday
morning in Los Angeles.
When asked about his thoughts on the last minute decision by
Margules to pull out of the fight Schaefer said. “Librado came
to fight and I am very disappointed that his opponents came just
to pack their bags. It was very unprofessional and uncalled for
and I hope the IBF will install Librado as the mandatory for
Lucian Bute.”

Cozumel Short Report |

By William Trillo
I was hunkered down ringside in Cozumel
on Saturday night and come what may, be it torrential
downpour or brutal heat I was prepared to cover a dozen
scheduled fights. With the night 1/4 of the way through
a team member from Donovan Georges team tapped me on the
shoulder and told me the fight with Andrade was off.
That's all I needed to hear and I packed my gear and
made my way out of the stadium. I did get to cover three
quick hitters though and here are some results and
photos from the portion I did get to shoot.

Margules: "Pulling Donovan George
Was Hardest Decision Of My Career" |
|
Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing and
co-promoter of super middleweight contender Donovan "Da Bomb"
George (22-1-1, 19 KO's), says pulling George out of his fight
against Librado Andrade was the hardest decision he's had to
make during his career as a promoter... but it was definitely
the right one.
George was scheduled to face the tough veteran Andrade (30-4, 23
KO's) in a 12-round IBF super middleweight title elimination
fight Saturday night at the Froilan Lopez Baseball Field in
Cozumel, Mexico, but a huge discrepancy in the size of the ring
forced Margules to make a very tough call.

Margules Pulls the Ring Out >From Under
Andrade vs. George |
|
By William Trillo
A teary eyed Donovan George walked into Librado Andrade’s side
of the dressing room to apologize for the fight falling out, he
told Andrade he wanted to fight but on the advice of his team
the fight would not go on. The two embraced in a tearful hug and
then went their separate ways into a rainy Cozumel, Mexico
night.
There was no reason for Donovan to apologize, he wanted to fight
and cancelling the show was not his agenda.
The reason for their tears was simple, they are fighters who
wanted to prove they belonged at the top of the Super
Middleweight division and the only way to get there was to
settle it in the ring.
If only it were that easy.

Andre Ward Climbs Over Carl Froch
To The Top Of The Super Middleweights,
& Undercard Results from Atlantic City |
|
By Tim Donaldson
It seemed as though it might have been an ominous sign floating
in the air above the ring just before the fight was to start. It
was clear to anyone in Boardwalk Hall, a thick fog hanging in
the building. Surely this is not the first time that fog has
made its way through the open doors into this Atlantic City
landmark, but this time maybe, just maybe, it carried some
meaning to the fight that was about to begin. Fog is not
something too often associated with California. But England?
Froch’s fans were buzzing. This in their eyes was a good omen.

Ward Wins Super Six Final By Completely
Outclassing Froch Through 12;
Froch Shows True Class In Defeat,
More Should Take Note |
|
Andre Ward (now 25-0, 13 KO's) not only won the
Super Six Tournament Final, but unified the WBA/WBC Super
Middleweight Titles with a one-sided, dominant performance over
Carl Froch. Each round played out pretty much the same, with
Ward using his ring intelligence to hit and not get hit,
smothering Froch's punches when he could. Froch did help Ward by
fighting Wards and not his own which made Froch look uneasy
throughout the entire bout. Leading up to the fight Froch was as
confident as can be, but when the bell sounded it was a
completely different story. Froch was tense and slow and could
not get a rhythm going whatsoever, missing most of his shots
from far. Ward used that to his advantage, which he would later
state, and simply picked Froch apart.

Steve Molitor's Unfinished Business;
Put Up Or Shut Up Time For Sebastian Gauthier |
|
Two-time world super bantamweight champion Steve
"The Canadian Kid" Molitor has picked out the perfect Christmas
present for provincial rival Sebastian Gauthier, wrapped with a
bow on top and even delivered it to Quebec City. Unfortunately,
at least for now, the gift remains unopened.
Last month in Gauthier's backyard, after Molitor (34-2, 12 KOs)
won a 10-round split decision on the Lucian Bute-Glenn Johnson
card at Pepsi Center in Quebec City, Team Gauthier loudly
complained about an unfair outcome and requested an immediate
rematch. Team Molitor has officially offered a rematch February
11 to Gauthier (21-3, 13 KOs) at Hershey Centre in Mississauga,
Ontario, which is where Steve lives and trains.

“Round 12” Press Conference In Cozumel, Mexico; Andrade & George
Meet For The First Time |
|
|
Report & Photos By William
Trillo
It will all be on the line Saturday night
in an IBF Super Middleweight Title Eliminator Battle as
Librado Andrade (30-4, 23 KO's) and Don "Da Bomb" George
(22-1-1, 19 KO's) will square off in what is sure to be
a no holds barred night of boxing on Mexico’s isle known
as Cozumel.
One local reporter tried to get the fireworks started
early when he told Librado he respected him as a fighter
but hoped he had no respect for George in the ring on
Saturday night.
